Essentially UEFA have said that the Premier League would be allowed a maximum of 5 teams to take part in next season's CL.

If a non-top 4 team wins the EL, they would join the top 4 in the CL.

If a non-top 4 team wins the CL (i.e, Chelsea or City), they would join the top 4 in the CL.

If both the EL and CL are won by teams not finishing in the top 4, they would join the top 3 in the CL (with the 4th placed team dropping to the EL).

Hence in theory, had he been issued a second yellow, that would have triggered the automatic 2 games suspension. I don't think it would. If he picked up a second yellow that gets turned in to a red.
The yellows would not be counted so would still be on 8

I understand what you're saying, I just don't believe it's correct. As @chrissivad has said, it would go back to 8 yellows and he'd only get a 1 match ban because it's his first red of the season.

Not that it's relevant as he didn't get sent off...
