What happened to Alex Sandro? Was highly rated and touted around last year but not heard a peep about him being linked with us or the other clubs needing a left-back.

Sorry, I'm not sure this means!! I never really understand all this stuff. Are you comparing a couple of choices against the guys we have or are these the best in Europe or something?

I'm comparing his stats per 90mins to the players we've been linked with the most at LB, and Rodriguez wins in almost every category...

My first ever post on this site was an article from some obscure website linking us to him, in the ITK thread. I even included the whole article, complete with images.

The first response (of many) came in 30 seconds after my OP "fucking hell, can you even comprehend how many rules you've just broken?"

I still have A&C induced nightmares.

Marcos Rojo of Sporting Lisbon - Argentine, 24, can also play at CB, is another one to add to the list. Linked with Monaco.

was asking an argentine on another forum about him the other day and he says he's more of a cb who plays at lb for the national team because they don't have many options - bit like jan for belgium.

Whilst not a left back per se i'd go for Tonny Vilhena as a left midfield / left back option. He's played there a couple of times previously and LVG has said he sees him as a possible future lb for Holland and Tonny has said he is happy to play there (just missed out in the final Dutch squad for the WC).

Obviously I think we still need a proper left back so we could get someone like Ben Davies and Vilhena and we would have masses of options. Or we could get the other Feyenoord df Bruno Martins Indi who can play either CB or LB (although I like Vilhena more in general terms).

Luke Shaw, if cost to high, then another S/ampton LB, who people, seem to think will be as good as Shaw, Matt Targett .

In football in general I think the standard of fullback is generally pretty awful and I cannot think of too many names that really impress me. For a position that has become of such importance in my opinion, as they are the players who get the most time and space on the ball in order to do something with it, the standard of player hasn't improved at all. The actual output of most players, both in attack and defence, is largely disappointing and wasteful and doesn't actually make up for the trade off of playing an attacking fullback for what he can do up the pitch, disregarding somewhat how he does defensively.

As for some of the names mentioned:

Rodriguez - Some quality with the ball at his feet and possibly one of the more intelligent full backs out there, I do know what the OP is getting at though from the little I have seen of him. Not entirely convinced, but that is a common theme amongst all of them...

B. Davies - Is nothing more than average.

Shaw - Solid but not spectacular, though still young. Predictably is priced about 5x what he is really worth currently.

Umtiti - Never looked comfortable in the games I have seen him play left back. I think that goal against us has lured people in.

Blind - Midfield now isn't he?

A. Cole - Probably wouldn't say no to this deal. At least defensively would be quite solid. Attacking wise though I have always maintained that he is pretty poor.

Others like Alex Sandro or Rojo I haven't seen enough of. It is worrying, and to me reinforces my opinion, though when people mention Alaba as one of the better ones around, because I think he is a very average player personally.

If we are buying one, then I guess of the realistic propositions then Cole or Rodriguez.

When it comes to Rose, his two main problems are his mindset of not tracking back when he has the ball and his crossing (which is the case with all our fullbacks). His one on one defending is no worse than any of our other fullback options and whilst I'm not too impressed with his general play on the ball the same could be said for about 75% of the squad. I would like to see what would happen with some actual coaching and hopefully now a manager in place who can work with and improve players.

Don't know how hard it would be to get Leighton Baines from Everton. Not saying we could, or should, but just putting it out there. Less likely to go to Utd now with Moyes gone.

Less likely to go to utd with them giving evra a new contact and probably signing shaw. I'd imagine Chelsea are looking for a back up to azpilacueta rather than top, top dollar. Could be in with a shout there.

I hope its someone we never heard of.
Defenders can adjust better to PM just need to learn the physical side of the game.

Think we should sign Ashley Cole and keep Danny Rose. Don't think Rose is as bad as some people make out. Going forward he is pretty good just need the defensive side of his game to be worked on. Could learn a lot off Cole and needs coaching in the right way.

Anyone know anything about Didac Vila? Broke through under Poch at Español, was pretty highly rated iirc, then went to Milan and has been shipped out on loan every season since. Played at Betis last season.

On 24 December 2013, Davies signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Swansea until June 2017...

:(

would probably make him a difficult/expensive option... Not too sure how secure wolfsburg is at the moment,... maybe rodriguez is a better option overall? I've never seen him play.
