Spursidol, I think the article's not referring to the wider extension of the NDP but only to the core site and, in particular, the stadium and Southern development site.

It's a poor article because it doesn't tell us (in the way other journalists have done) what the 'land deal' is about.

In fact the 'land deal' refers to what we know already: the planned transfer of the freehold of the stadium and Southern Development site owned by THFC (after the remaining acquisitions by private treaty, compulsory purchase or transfer from the Council) to Haringey and the lease back on a 999-year term to enable the Council to use its powers under the Town and Country Planning Act (TCPA). These powers will prevent injunctions based on right to light (and certain other rights) from halting the development. Householders affected will still be entitled to compensation but this will not unduly delay progress. Most important of all, preventing injunctions will remove an obstacle for development finance.

None of this mentioned in the article...

The stadium approach -- if it goes ahead -- will be paid for out of public funds, mostly from the Mayor's fund allocated to the area after the riots. The scheme seems to be based on a widening of Whitehall Street but a bigger space could be created from knocking down the Love Lane flats, various garages in the vicinity, etc. The opening of Whitehall Street to the High Road would be enlarged by the loss of High Road buildings either side. The reconfigured WHL station, with its ticket hall and entrance at the south end of Love Lane would link directly with the stadium approach. The British Queen would therefore be demolished.

Land between Love Lane and the railway arches is ripe for development and it is possible that the whole scheme could involve shops, bars, cafes, etc., a place to hang out. The idea is to turn the stadium public areas and stadium approach into a leisure space hosting a range of other events, making the area a 364 days-a-year 'leisure destination'. There was talk that the entire space between Moselle Street and Whitehall Street could be cleared and developed but this would have meant the loss of a 60-flat tower block as well as the Love Lane flats and High Road frontage. The Brook House development will make about 30 low-rent flats available to those displaced from the stadium approach scheme, so it seems the stadium approach would stop short of the big clearance.

It appears the club are in talks with the railway people in the hope they will pay for the stadium reconfiguration. If the railway folks won't pay for it, then this will mean the allocation of some of the funds earmarked for the stadium approach and therefore a more modest scheme.

The club would like the station renamed and would also like to change the name of White Hart Lane itself, at least from the station to the High Road. No doubt this is important to the value of a naming rights deal. The stadium approach is good for the stadium itself but the associated development will be important for the economy of the wider area, the market value of flats and the value of commercial spaces in the Southern Development. There is no necessary connection between an increased stadium capacity, which would in any case be modest.

Ok i'm confused............why would we want to change the name of the stattion? Surely it helps to keep it the same as the stadium name?

Of course i know we will have naming rights but it will still be WHL right? eg The VIrgin Arena at WHite Hart Lane??

Or am i completely wrong here?

As Arsenal have 'Arsenal Station', so might we want 'Tottenham Hotspur Station' - or similar.

I think the station is more likely to be named after the stadium, and hence the naming rights. So Qatar Air Stadium - would then be on all train maps, and could mean an even bigger carrot for the sponsor, and more cash for us...

You could be right, in which case you've answered your own original question as to why the station name would be changed.

White Hart Lane should be in there somewhere on the stadium and the station.
I still think the naming rights should include WHL.
as in ' Virgin at White Hart Lane'. Must be some surely.
or 'Micro Soft at The Lane.
But enough of my problems.

Terrific input on this thread by the usual suspects.
I'm just providing the light entertainment.
Thanks fellas. You know who you are!

But would TfL allow the inclusion of a sponsor's name in the title of station?

TfL will certainly want to know who is going to meet the astronomical cost of changing all the tube maps on all the stations, trains, leaflets and pocket guides if they do.

Levy does it again. It will cost between £90 and £150m to put a roof on the OS, but we get it done for £3m.

Can see the rest of the stadium done for a Bale autographed shirt.
