Yep, exactly this, Zaniolo and Dembele are not comparable, or at least they shouldn't be compared, different players playing in different positions with different skillsets, both left footed I suppose lol.

I tend to agree but there are massive similarities in their strength and close control with the ball. You could also argue that when we signed Dembele he was an out and out attacking mid almost second striker at times and he didn't set the world alight until Poch converted his position. Our CM 2 was Mason and Bentaleb in Poch's first year and Dembele was a bit part AM.

I just can’t see Zaniolo happening. I don’t know if I would go as far as saying it’s a smokescreen for someone else but I just don’t see Levy ok’ing big money for him no matter how much Conte (apparently) wants him.

I think (just my opinion) that we are;

Pursuing a player not yet known/reported etc.

or

Our main target is actually Paqueta but we are holding out for whatever reason (paying a fair price/backup for the above unknown player etc)

I am probably completely wrong and I’m not against it (maybe 80% in favour but who am I!), I just can’t see us getting Zaniolo.

Sorry not sure how you can say this....Levy has given conte/pat £150m to spend. I would say its unlikely but not because money is not there more because Roma may decide not to sell

Sorry, I didn’t explain myself very well, by money I meant trying not to pay over the odds as in waiting to agree a fair deal as opposed to just throwing whatever money they want. Happy to pay a fair price but what they value him at and what we want to pay may be some way apart.

So I agree with you, we certainly have the money if we want him ?

I wonder what Jose's relationship/feeling with Spurs is like after his not-so-distant sacking. Might he feel spiteful enough to want to screw us over - to string us along over Zaniolo only to block the transfer at the last hurdle?

He may be a passionate man but I would expect he wouldn't let that cloud his judgement... he will let Zaniolo go only if he's happy to release him if their valuation is met, and comfortable with his other squad options.

It will be quite hilarious if we sign Zaniolo and he follows the same trajectory as Kulu, who many also complained about before he proved them all wrong. Guess we may never learn...

Interesting - we don't really have very long to get over it. I wonder how long we wait before switching to (by reports) Paqueta, also recognising that others will probably ramp up on him too pretty soon.

Need to take a view on the likelihood pretty soon IMO
