I've heard this mentioned a few times about us. It's generally meant as a compliment, suggesting we're lacking in individual talent, but work well as a good team.

Isn't this just a load of bollocks?

I know that in the past we've had average players, alongside world class footballers such as Gazza, Sheringham, Ginola, King, Modric, VDV, Berbatov, and Bale, however I think it's doing a disservice to this team to imply that we lack great players in their own right.

Kane and Lloris are the first two that spring to mind. Kane is one of the most prolific young strikers on the planet, and Lloris is...well...Lloris.

We also have Dembele, who is fast turning into one of the best CMs in the league. Eriksen was Ajax's star player, and widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Europe. Alli is fast becoming England's new wonder kid. Son was one of the star players in Germany. And the combination of Vertonghen and Alderweireld has regularly been referred to as the best CB partnership in the Prem.

Add to that the likes of Dier and Lamela and I'd say that we actually have a squad brimming with star quality. It's just that they are playing together as a team, rather than one or two carrying the rest.

For me, this is the most talented squad we've had in recent years. Sure, Redknapp's team with the likes of King, Modric, VDV, and Bale had clear star players, but I reckon a lot of people are too dazzled to see the quality in our squad.

No vdv type star egos who get in a huff when told they have to fight for their place and aren't guaranteed a start.

Just one big happy squad of players who will do what needs to be done for the sake of the team

Fair comment SK, although I haven't seen much mention of a lack of individual talent. What I think fans are saying is that there are no prima donnas in the team. All the players have a squad mentality. None have moaned or thrown tantrums about being subbed, put on the bench or not even making the bench. How many times has a players agent been in the media?

Also, personal discipline. How many times have players been caught out at nightclubs, falling down steps drunk etc? Shagging team mates wives or girlfriends? Geting abusive in public (ala Vardy?). Also, as Toby said the other day "there are no heroes" and "if you don't work hard you don't play". The players keep a low public profile, but what they do do enhances the clubs reputation.

So I think we recognise we have star quality, but no "big stars" or "big names" in the traditional sense. We recognise also the team ethos and hard work ethic which creates this sense of equality throughout the team. You only have to see the players post match to know there is harmony and no ill feelings or jealousy between players.

Yea because VDV got in to a huff because he had to fight for his place:rolleyes:

We don't have no stars imo and we don't have 11 stars like someone said above, we have players with a lot of potential who are willing to work hard and compliment the way we play

The CM is the most amazing thing I have ever seen and arguably proof of the above
We started the season without Bentaleb and had to force Dier in to a new role which suited him very well and he slowly made his own
For the first 10 games or so our player of the season was arguably Mason. We played a midfield 3 of Bentaleb, Mason and Dier against Everton and put in our best CM display of the season.
Then Mason and Bentaleb both get injured and we see Dembele who was linked with a move away and looked destined to leave turn his career around and realise his potential.
Alli also benefited from this and looks better in the PL than he did in League 1 and then moved further forward and really found his feet.
We have then seen Carroll come in and put in some good performances covering for Dembele when he got injured.

We still have a long run in but considering how well mason performed at the start of the season, Bentaleb last season and Carroll has shown in his cameo's. These players can be big for us later on especially if Dembele, Alli and Dier start to get tired.

This is the same story all over the park, everytime a player has come in, they have made a difference when covering for the player they replaced except for Kane(as there is no understudy) and Lloris

Most of my friends generally consider Kane, Lloris and Eriksen to be really good but not really stars, unlike Bale or Modric. I don't think any of them realize how crucial Toby, Dembele and Dier are to this team.

I disagree about vdv. He always worked hard and was in the starting 11 on merit. While he played for us he was nearly always one of our best players and could nick you a goal.
I'm not sure why he would get into a huff when he would get into the team on merit anyway?

I was actually going to start a thread about this. Pochetino has an amazing way of getting the best out of players at the right times. He's done it with Trippier and davies who both looked shocking at times last season. Now you really couldn't pick our best fullback pairing.
He's done it with dier who has been great in 3 different positions. He's done it with Bentaleb and mason. He's done it with Carroll who now slots in and does a job. He's done it with wimmer who hasn't had a sniff and now comes in seamlessly to replace verts. He's done it with son and lamela. Lamela was looking a bit flat so he brings son in, now lamela is looking back to his best again.

I think he just has the players fighting so hard to get onto the team and is fantastic at gauging when to pull one out and bring one in.

Poch is a top manager and I think we need to do everything we can to keep hold of him.

Had my doubts about our Toby, thought athletico would take him back if he was that good. Boy I was wrong. Reckon he will be bid after big time in the summer. As will a lot of our non super star players. Let's just hope we can get Cl for next year to give them all a reason to stay.

"Andre Villas-Boas came he said to me 'you're not my number one' and I had played two years, like, unbelievable, so for me it was really strange that he said that to me. So then I said, well, it's better to leave and that is what happened.

"It was a stupid decision, the most stupid in my career to leave Tottenham. I absolutely regret it because it was the best two years in my football life."

Better remove those rose tinted Rafael shades, Sounds like he ran off in a huff to me because he was no longer a guaranteed as a starter to me. The essence of ego
He would've been shown the door under Poch too, least vdv admits he was a fool

Lloris is France's #1 and captain,.... Look at Kane's scoring rate.... 2 big stars at minimum.

Not the big ego problems, but loads of stars in this squad. I just mentioned the 2 most obvious (y)

Think it's more about no prima donnas and not playing a style to suit an individual rather than not having top quality individuals.

Kane is recognised as potentially one of the most expensive players in the world and in Lloris I believe we have the best keeper in the Prem. Alli is becoming respected as one of the best young players in world football.

Fortunately none of them seem to demand first team football and are all working hard. Despite a lot of praise none seem to be angling for a move to an elite club and appear focused on this season.
