What's new

On the playing side what is it that we’re missing the most?

Ledley King or Jan Vertonghen

The player who runs the back line.

Prime Walker, Rose, Dembele and Wanyama. That’s what we are missing. Players that dominate their area of the field
The players we got in are not as good as the ones that went out.

Dembele is levels above Ndombele.

Eriksen is a miles better footballer than Lo Celso.

I can't even think of a player we have signed that gets into that peak Poch team. Bale possibly with the right manager.

The recruitment has been terrible for 3 years.

High on the list has to be someone who can hit a deadball. How many points have we thrown away this season from abysmal set pieces? Particularly Kanes free kicks.

Someone with genuine game intelligence and grit at
- CB, who can lead and organise; and
- CM who can dictate play

Ndombele has all the talent needed to do that, but not (at this point) the influence or character

An identity.

We don’t seem to have a cohesive playing style that we take to each game, it’s a bit like we turn up, see what happens in the first ten minutes and then go from there - I can’t remember the last time we seemed to arrive and put our own authority on a game.

Sadly there are too many things to be solved by just one thing.

We need a top class central defender and someone to partner PEH, if I can give two areas that we need the most.

RB and RW are secondary, but also need addressing

1. A new set of centre backs. Look at peak Utd when they had Vidic, Stam and Ferdinand... they dominated forwards all the time. Now look at our centre backs and they’re consistently all over the place.

2. Full back concern. Other than Doherty being awful and Aurier inconsistent I’m also concerned at left back. Davies is a bloody good defender but his lack of pace seriously hampers him. Reguilon is generally very good going forward but he’s poor defensively. Sessegnon will be back next season but we don’t know if he’ll be able to reproduce his Bundesliga form in the EPL.

3. Athletic, combative central midfield workhorse required. As others have said we need another Dembele... an allrounder who can be both a defensive rock and offensive. Soumare, Bissouma, Ndidi... or someone similar will do. I know these 3 don’t offer the offensive play of Dembele but likewise with Hojbjerg they do the job they’re paid to do.

4. Playing our creative players in the correct position. Ndombele has had his best games as the most advanced of 3 central midfielders. Likewise this is also Lo Celso‘s best position yet neither of them are being played in this position.

5. 15+ goal scoring forward. We need another Son, someone who will contribute 15 plus in the league. Take Son and/or Kane out of the team and the goals completely dry up.

Two Centre Backs we can trust to form a solid and reliable partnership. Where they compliment each other with different skill sets and allow us to play an attacking and expansive game and none of this low block bollocks

The four we currently have in their current state are not suitable to play this way. People can say well West Ham have Craig Dawson but West Ham full backs don't got bombarding forward as much as ours are meant to and is also protected Infront by both Rice and Soucek.

Our centre backs didn't look that bad when Sissoko and Hjobjerg were protecting them yet all of sudden Jose has tried to be more expansive and now the centre backs lack of quality is being shown up.

For me if we get this position right then we might be on to something.

Ball retention. Under mourinho we have become clueless on the ball. There was one bit of play in the second half where Son, Ndombele and another player worked the ball out and beat the Newcastle pressure and it was so out of character for this team it was a surprise to see. We used to be able to handle the ball like that continuously throughout a game now even against the poorest teams in the league we get pressed off the ball.
