i mean't to post this after the everton game. I have often seen reports/comments by spurs supporters as well as from other supporters regarding arsenal only playing one english player in their team. we only had Lennon and Crouch from the starting 11. whilst this does not bother me personally, being a foreign based supporter, i noted how far we have come and what a cosmopolitan team we put out now adays. if you look back at the strong english spine in our recent teams as opposed to saturdays game.

although there is still a strong english core to the team, us not fielding one was a result of injuries and player rotation. (dawson/defoe/king) were out injured. i can't remember why hudd did not play. When i look at the players we want to bring in they are not english either. Is our team changing for the forseeable future ?are we following what the likes of utd, chelsea, arse and pool do.

But consider that Hudd was knackered/crocked, and Dawson, King and Defoe were crocked, and it's very likely that all four would be in the 11 if fit, I don't see it as a problem.

Adding to that Bale is Welsh and Hutton Scottish so they don't count as foreign to me (well, maybe Hutton does).

Hudd and Jenas were rested after Inter. King, Daws, Defoe, certain starters, were all injued. Bale and Hutton are at least British.

Our first choice side looks something like this (I imagine, obviously we've yet to see it because of Defoe's injury):

Gomes
Hutton Dawson King Ekotto
Lennon Huddlestone Modric Bale
Van der Vaart
Defoe

Only 4 non Brits, and 5 out of the 7 Brits are English. Then you have Crouch who'd be the most prominent alternative to Defoe and Jenas whois arguably first choice to come in for either CM.

Ultimately, my first concern is that we play good football and win, but I do like to have a UK and Irish elemet and we have that more than most.

good points and in the main i agree. the style of play and winning is what counts. we have done that with a strong english core and have always emphasised that. i look at the world cup squad and a large contingent were from the spurs team. when i read the starting 11 for that game i just noted how many foreign based players were in the team.

I was looking at the line-up for the UEFA cup final 1st and 2nd legs in 1972 - There were four "foreigners" in the team..

Pat Jennings NI
Joe Kinnear ROI
Mike England Wales
Alan Gilzean Scotland.

I used to love watching them play each other in the home internationals.

That's the thing, our squad is about half domestic, half foreign. We could put out a foreign team and a Uk&Eire team against eachother if we wanted (Cudicini has been here long enough to be English :-D )

im not a racist

Your must be either overcompensating for some deep seeded racist tendencies or actually trying to imply that the OP is of a racist nature. If there is a third option please enlighten me?

Are the governing bodies racist for implementing rules stating that increasing numbers of players must be homegrown?

That was my initial reaction and was going to comment but thought better of it seeing that i'm not english and a spurs supporter first and foremost and look beyond nationality in the main.

To give the benefit of the doubt, maybe s/he just caveats every post in every thread with that?

please make every attempt to engage your brain and read through the post. if you bothered you would see i made reference to that in the next paragraph. there is no conspiracy or accusation made. i was highlighting this fact based on previous teams having a strong english core.

I wish they would bring back the Home Internationals. The Scandinavians have it. We could do a Summer tournament in the seasons that there is no World Cup or European Cup. I think it would definately improve the quality of all teams involved. Very much like Rugby and the four (now 6) nations.

Me too. Three competitive games in the summer would be a great replacement for some of the international friendlies that are the subject of so many complaints (they are, aren't they?).

And we'd get to see a UK side lift an international trophy every two years. That might do something for the spirit of the national teams and the players involved.

Umm .... no, we don't. We had our own club competition, top 4 from each of Norway, Denmark and Sweden playing an off-season tournament, but that was scrapped a couple of years ago.

Norway play Denmark in these qualifiers and play Sweden in friendlies every few years, but no "Scandinavian Nations" tournament.

Having said that, I do want the Home Internationals back. They were scrapped just before my time, I really want to see it given a go again.

Is our team changing for the forseeable future ?are we following what the likes of utd, chelsea, arse and pool do.

I'm not sure the distinction between English and British players is an important one in this sense.

If you care about this sort of thing then imo most will care about the British non-British distinction rather than the English non-English one.
