After watching loads of YouTube clips of the next big South American superstars I started to wonder how our Welsh wizard was viewed by the South American fans.

Given that internationally he does not play for a big team and with us only having 1 year in the Champions League I wonder what they thought of him as a player given that they may have only seen limited performances. Do they watch a lot of Premier League football in the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Columbia etc?

Send this to BBC South American Football pundit Phil Vickery for a better response. Most of us will just guess & screw about

It would say they would probably rate him highly, purely based on the fact he's skillful, lots of flair and scores belters from outside the box. That's the sort of thing they love down there

Between Fox Sports 1, 2 and 3, ESPN 1, 2 and 3 and Sky we get every premier league game over the weekend plus all FA and League cup games when televised
The Premier league has a huge following over here and the commentators are generally very knowledgeable and IMHO much more impartial than the ones you listen to over in the UK.
Although most Latins traditionally support Real Madrid or Barca many now prefer to watch the Premier league as it's far more entertaining than La Liga. When asked what team I support the majority no longer look at me as if I'm from Mars when I answer Tottenham Hotspur and generally talk about Bale, Lloris, Adebayor etc.

I went to Colombia with a load of mates about 5 or 6 years ago to travel and visit a friend who was working with some orphaned kids. She introduced us to them and one of them asked us who we supported. There were a few of us there and one answered Man U, one Arsenal, one Chelsea and two Liverpool, to which they all gave an enthusiastic nod. I answered Spurs to which they replied "cual", which I believe means something like "you what?". I got laughed at and blamed it on not being in the Champions League etc etc. Nice to know it's changed a little.

To be honest if the Real Madrid president is talking about paying the earth for him anyone in South America who didn't know much about him will no doubt have found out pretty quickly.
I no longer think we are the only ones who talk about Messi, Ronaldo and Bale together, its becoming commonplace.

Messi, Ronaldo and Bale. How people laughed when that sentence was first put forward. And now it is the accepted order of things.

And one of these plays for us. Which is nice.

Yes indeed only one, the other two will just have to settle for what they've got and learn live with it.:)

Interesting comment CowInAComa and so true. The news media over here has hyped up Gareth Bale as much as they have in Europe and he is the one reason why more and more Latins are watching Spurs play.
Our foray into the Champions league three seasons back helped tremendously to put Spurs on the world map, however the power of the Premier league's popularity definitely shouldn't be taken lightly and thanks to Bale's amazing season people over here talk about him constantly whereas a couple of years ago we were more known for having Wilson Palacios and Giovanni Dos Santos in our ranks.

In my opinion we've been the most entertaining side in the league over the last 3 or 4 years. Win or lose there always seem to be goals or other talking points. I've even got my West Ham supporting (Sky subscribing) mate to watch all of our televised games and it's got to a stage where he actually cheers our goals before realising what has happened (quickly reverts to "we won the world cup" etc).

I think anyone who watches us over a sustained period will enjoy themselves, even though under AVB we're more measured than we were unded Harry, last season was chock full of late goals and other drama. So glad I'm a Spurs fan!

I happen to agree but there might be a little bias in both our opinions - maybe - just saying.... :cautious:

If you jizz up a wall in Australia doesn't your weird reverse gravity thing make it drip in the opposite direction? I could have my science wrong here, not sure.
I haven't jizzed up a wall recently but from memory when I have standing it flows down the wall, towards my little cotton socks, so you do the maths

I am from brasil (I live in UK now) and support spurs from young age because my mother was English and loved Martin Petters! Bale is great but not as great as Ronaldo or Messi. More direct but less style. England and Germany style. We should sell Gareth and build the squad. Like living in a small house with expensive oil painting - we need a bigger house!
