That doesn't surprise me SP

Didn't surprise me. Probably didn't surprise Cloughie either. In fact Keane was probably the only one who was surprised. He probably came into his 'proper self' with a paint brush in his hand and everything painted black (yeah, I know...we know a song about that), and thought "now I'll have to find an excusse to explain why I did this" Nutter.

Possibly the most ridiculous thread I've seen on SC, and that's up against some pretty stiff competition.

Possibly the most ridiculous thread I've seen on SC, and that's up against some pretty stiff competition.

I don't think so. I think it is a worthwhile debate. There is a lot of favouritism among fans and the same people get blamed for defeats even when they played well. Others are above criticism even when they play poorly or cost us games.

I openly predicted that WP would lose some (not a lot) of his popularity. I also predicted that Dawson would go through a period where he was blamed for a lot. It's a continuous trend among fans.

  • New guy comes in
  • Offers attributes and qualities that we needed and was different to his predecessor
  • We hail him as the next (insert something impressive)
  • Anyone raising questions early is immediately labelled fickle/stupid/pessimistic etc
  • We start blaming a different guy as the guy the new guy replaced can no longer be blamed for everything
  • After we've got over his qualities we start to realise he isn't perfect
  • Some go OTT and call him useless/liability etc while others defend too strongly
  • Eventually he has settled and we can start having a more mature, reasonable debate about the new guy
Palacios has now shown us his strengths and weaknesses and we should be able to debate his qualities. I still maintain that he is vital to our midfield and has played a pivotal role in getting us to where we are today. I think in a team that is better at passing, moving and making themselves available for a pass WP would give the ball away a lot less. I also don't believe he is good enough to play for Man Utd, Chelsea or Arsenal.

He offers us what we need and he is an influential player for us. We should be happy enough with that but it's time to stop going over the top regarding his talent.

For the record, he gives the ball away less than Huddlestone by a long way. That is a fact. And he gave it away less by a long way than Huddlestone on Saturday. I won't even scare with the amount Huddlestone gave the ball away against arsenal.

The truth is his brother didn't die, he was abducted due to Wilson's fame in Houndouras and then murdered after they paid the ransom to get him back. That is very different to someone just dying and probably haunts Wilson all the time, even though it was not his fault.

We all know that mate! That was the point..

he's a bit like that bloke that played for liverpool. sissoko or something. great at winning the ball and breaking up the play, but his passing game can be poor. the fact that he played badly the other day was more down to harry picking him. he didn't look ready for the game. oh yeah, and without him we would have been fucked last season!

I'm not even sure his passing is that poor, it is more when and where he decides to do it. He actually has a fairly decent range of passing which at times he has used to good effect when he is in the opposition half. On Saturday it just seemed that he was delaying playing the simple ball in our half and then getting caught out. Just a case of not being up to the speed of the game more than anything I think.

Close this foolish thread! undermining players at this stage of our season is behaviour of an enemy.

I love Wilson and Wilson loves me!

I can think of a few specific balls he has played through that have been sublime. But I can think of a few more specific examples where he has passed to an opposition player. I think his passing is fine, I think his decision making when he has the ball is a bit suspect. But the things he does without the ball make up for any deficiency in his attacking play.

Maybe he should just really concentrate on the simple pass?? Win it and give straight to one of the playmakers...

Just a thought

My thoughts exactly. He went through a rocky period earlier in the season when Modric was out and then his performances picked up again once he was back. I think he found Modric as the easy outball for him, where he could just play it to him when he didn't have the time or space to make a decision. That seemed to work, but maybe he just didn't get into that zone at the weekend, or maybe Modric had to come and help him out a little more. My feeling is a little of both.

Clearly the rest of his game more than makes up for it in most cases.

I don't understand the criticism of his passing. He has an average pass completion of 83%. Huddlestone's is 77%. In his last three games Huddlestones passing has been absolutely awful:

v Arse - 21/32 65%
v Chel - 27/42 64%
v ManU - 34/47 72%

Palacios
v ManU - 30/35 85%

He didn't play in the home wins but away to arse for example he still had a better pass completion than Huddlestone did at home or away 84%.

In big games, when under pressure Huddlestone gives the ball away a third of the time he sees it. This is partly due to his own inability to move past an opponent with the ball. As soon as he is pressed he has to release it in a hurry.

If Huddlestone was busy bombing forward creating shitloads of chances or making defence splitting passes regularly or was a busy **** who made it difficult for the opposition play you could say there's a pay off for his wastefulness but he doesn't. He moves the ball slowly and methodically. In a midfield 5 you could maybe make a case for Huddlestone, and he is a decent footballer with a nice passing technique but as we saw saturday he is more of a liability than Palacios - giving the ball away for Nani to eventually win a pen.

All players have off days, and Wilson had one away to ManU, while playing out of position for some of it. I for one think he has contributed greatly to our present position in the league, well done Wilson.

He was poor against utd but as good as he is, he needs to use the ball better. Looking at Mod and Hud in the middle it really has shown in the past few games how much better we play with them. Attack is the best form of defence and in my view next game we should go with the chelsea lineup
