The Newcastle Martin's goal was to illustrate how lax he is when recovering once we have lost possession.

Huntington started further away from our goal than Chimbonda, yet was level with Martin's when the shot was taken (offering an overlap), whereas Chimbonda was simply walking/jogging around the half-way line.

It was a pattern seen time and time again in match after match after match. An attack of ours would break down. Both our full-backs would be high up the pitch. Lee and to a certain degree Ekotto would run hell for leather to get back in position, Chimbonda would saunter to around the half-way line.

As for the matches against Arsenal, Carling Cup he gave away a penalty tackling from behind because he was caught out of position and not reading the game, league he let Toure free in the area to tap in from about 3 yards.

I know people will defend him vigourously whatever is put up by anyone. He could give away 5 penalties and get sent off in every single match he played and still I feel the majority of you would come out and blame someone else for the penalties, or claim that Stalteri would have given away 10 in the same position.

The fact is that all of our players make mistakes. Robbo made more mistakes last season than the rest of our defence put together. Dawson made plenty. Even Ledley had a couple of very shonky moments when he came back from injury.

Yes Chimbonda made a few errors, but he didn't make as many in crucial positions as Stalteri made the season before. On top of this Chimbonda offers us more going forwards than Stalteri, offers a goal threat at set pieces, and is better in the air than Stalteri.

Chimbonda is far from perfect but for me there is absolutely no debate about who our best right back is. My only real concern about Chimbonda is his attitude and whether he actually wants to be at the club. If he does then I think he'll be a critical part of our defence this season.

Look people, as I have said numerous times in this thread, it's past, it's history, it's last season.

The beginning of the season is just over a week away so it would be foolish to sell him now unless Jol is willing to play Stalteri (seems he might have to with LB injuries), so let's get behind him and whether you think the sun shines out of his arse or you think he's an average pile of wank defensively (like myself), we need to get behind him and hope that he has improved over the summer.

Debating last seasons performances is pointless, those of us who think he made countless costly errors do so because we have looked time and time again at videos of goals conceded and seen him badly positioned, slow to react, giving up when someone gets past him and refusing to do anything even resembling tracking back when an attack breaks down. Those of you who think the sun shines out of his arse didn't see him doing any of those things and the goals were all Dawson's and Robbo's faults.

It leaves a situation where me and people like me think the other side are completely fucking blind. It makes the other side thing that people like me are on drugs and seeing the equivalent of pink elephants on the pitch.

It's a never-ending circle that will never be resolved.

We've got to forget last season now and focus on the season ahead, support all our players and hope that they are ALL better than last season having improved over the summer.

[CONTROVERSY] chimbonda is the more complete right-back in that he offers a lot more to the 'team' but he's not better at defending than stalteri [/CONTROVERSY]

I think the first 2 highlighted comments show your huge bias against Chimbonda. The Martins goal was in no way anything to do with Chimbonda. You might just as well blame it on Berbatov .Or on Clive Allen. The comparison with Lee ( your brother ) and Ekotto is typical. A generalised statement and if you really believe that his defending is worse than Ekotto's then Ekotto must be a close relative too.

Some of the goals you blame on Chimbonda are not valid. You could blame many of them on other players . But you spin it in the way you want to.

The third highlighted point relects a childish playground mentality that you accused me of a few posts ago. Far from blind bias that you have in favour of Lee and against Chimbonda most of us have a balanced view about both . Both are good players with some weaknesses .Chimbonda is indeed sometimes a little slow to get back. Lee cannot cross with his left foot which at the very least restricts his attacking options. We could have better players in both positions. But both are quite capable of doing a good job and replacing either should not be a priority unless they want to go ( which remains possible in both cases).

So Carl please let's have balance in your posts, not bias.
