FC Porto hit with Paulo Assuncao bombshell

Brazilian midfielder sensationally walks out on champions

PauloAssuncao.jpg

Porto’s Brazilian midfielder, Paulo Assuncao, has dramatically walked out on the club.

The 28-year-old has invoked the FIFA Webster ruling whereby a player who wishes to leave one club for another may do so after three years of service with the only compensation due being the value of his wages left on his contract.

Assuncao has been an increasingly influential figure at Porto over recent seasons, even prompting Argentine pair Lucho Gonzalez and Lisandro Lopez to say he was the club’s best performer in 2007/08.

The midfield anchorman played 26 games in the league, 4 in the cup and all 8 in the Champions League.

Assuncao was known to be shaken when a group of Porto fans aggressively tried to convince him to sign a contract extension before a training session. Even so, the news comes as a shock.

Another worrying development for the Dragons is that UEFA is set to make a decision regarding the club’s involvement in corruption scandal on June 4th. Only then we will it be known if Porto can compete in the Champions League next season or not.

this dude is so good, porto are so stupid for letting him leave... plus it'd be worth getting him just to hear commentators try to pronounce his name..

Why would Assouncao be difficult to pronunce? Unless it's Pleaty of course..

Don't know much about this guy.. but would like any hard tackling CM, we can get as we really need someone to protect our back and win some balls in the middle of the park!

Out of interest/ignorance, how would it be pronounced? Ass-soon-chow? Ass-soon-kay-yow?

I'm just looking forward to the weekend editions of Tribal Football linking him with us.

Again, I repeat, noodles was singing about someone being free. Coincidence that it happened to be the same day Assuncao becomes a free agent? I think there could be something in this.

I assume it is pronounced Ass - Sun - Sow (like cow)

For now though he needs a nickname, Mick anyone?

Yep, I thought that was a good call, Mr Shin.

I'm wondering if this isn't the 'dark horse' of the window. Although Modric was fairly shadowy. Let's hope he doesn't turn out to be pony.

Help. I can't stop punning. They don't even make sense any more.

Coming from a Sporting fan that has to be a pretty good endorsement.
