Training German Shepherds to distinguish between pick invaders and footballers could be tricky. I do not want to see half the squad on physio room suffering from canine inflicted bite wounds, and Lord knows what UEFA would do to us if the mutt took out the ref...
Not really that diffficult. Alsatians have an IQ of about 70 in human terms. That's not that far short of the average for professional footballers (citation needed). Police dogs don't attack random members of the public & sheepdogs don't round up passing hikers.
Besides the main use is as a deterrent. You can keep a highly trained Alsatian to deal with actual pitch invaders, but as part of the pre-match entertainment have a couple of pit bulls worrying the groin of a dummy in an Arsenal shirt. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure .
