Barella, who plays the role Skipp played in the 352, is probably as close to being Paul Scholes as we'll ever see. Tough and tenacious as a CM but also with incredible vision and ball striking.

The role is effectively a trequartista which Wesley Sneijder used to play. It's not a No. 10 nor an 8, you're a cm but are tasked with taking up advanced positions on the flank of cm rather than carrying the ball there yourself.

It's not a wingers role, you don't overlap and you're not really a release ball for a counter. Barella used to cross too but he also pulled the trigger on passes to overlapping fullbacks, through balls to the strikers etc.

Skipp is a talented player but he isn't a trequartista and probably finds himself crossing more than he should because, well, Emerson and Doherty.

Weirdly, as someone else mentioned, Bissouma is the best qualified and really they should swap positions.

Bryan Gil is definitely not the answer. It is still essentially a cm role and he would get broken doing the defensive work the role also involves.

Annoying the Bryan Gil thread has become the Skipp isnt a winder thread.

I think Gil is a really promising player, looked good the last few times he has come on - less frenetic and a little more targetted. Hope he gets more opportunities soon and develops the way he can to something of a silky winger/attacking mid.

Disappointed that Lucas is still above him in the pecking order, but glad to see Gil has earned Conte's trust enough to at least come on in league and CL games. Baby steps but definite progress. Last season, even when we didn't have Rich or Kulu, Gil seemed so far down the pecking order that there was no hope for him at all while Conte was at the club.

'Trust' seems to be a big thing for Conte, so hopefully he gets another chance or two pre-WC given he's done well these past couple of games.

To be fair he drip fed Eriksen in to that Inter side and the whole world knew his qualities. It's nothing against Gil or Spence it's just how he does things. They need to show him they are ready to do what he's asking and then they'll play.

Yeah - I think we need to bear this in mind as it can be frustrating watching Royal and Lucas stinking the place out when we have talents in Spence and Gil sat on the bench. Hopefully it's a matter of time.

That said, he more or less brought Kulu straight into the side mid-season ahead of Lucas last year so he's happy to bring some players in quickly if he thinks they're ready. I think Gil will have to work harder than most to earn his trust as Conte isn't sure about his physicality in the Prem.

Needs to be sold or loaned in January.

And his position in the squad filled.

A failure of management otherwise.

Pretty much everyone predicted he would be first to be loaned last year and he was. Simply not a Conte-type player and he won't trust him until he bulks up.

Yeah, even when we had injuries to 3-4 of our other wide forwards he hasn't got a single start. He's clearly not going to get enough minutes to warrant keeping him around - better to loan him again and get him more minutes post- WC.

Clearly a very talented player but can't help but feel Paratici has probably got this one wrong, and a diminutive, technical, left sided winger probably shouldn't have been a priority regardless of his talent. Or at least if we went for one, we should've gone for the Georgian kid Kvaratskelia (sp?) who looks hard as nails, so direct, and much more suited to the Prem.

I could understand the demand if he was a decisive player but there was no reason for him to come on as had the providers on the field.

What we needed was a presence in attack. Hes not that

I think he’s a brilliant talent but at the same time I agree with Conte that he’s not currently suited to the Premier League.

When you look at the way our match today was refereed, or the way Villa-United was refereed, or a dozen other examples, a player such as Bryan would be tossed around like a rag doll without any earning any free kicks.

The new “leniency” was supposed to mean that refs erred on the side of letting play flow when there were 50/50 challenges. Instead it has meant in practice that blatant fouls are being ignored as a matter of course. A player such as Bryan has no chance under the current regime.

We need to loan him out until he puts on 15-20 lbs of muscle, or otherwise simply move on from him. Either way a creative AM needs to come in in January.

I agree 100%. As much as people want to see the lad given a chance, he gets rag dolled by players in the European matches. There is little chance he will have more luck in this league.

I have no idea if he'll make it. I'm no football genius who can tell which young players will make it.

But saying he needs to be sold in January or the management have failed is flat-out nonsense.
I said sold or loaned.

It's not looking good for him under Conte is it.

Let's not pretend otherwise.

I personally think he'll become a very good player. Not under us or Conte I'd add.

Just 6 minutes of PL football all season.

Zero starts in the Premier League or Champions League across either season.

Only featured for more than 20 minutes in a match twice under Conte - against Morecambe and NS Mura - in both cases substituted early in the second half with the team losing.

Even with no Son or Richarlison, and with Lucas and Kulusevski only fit to make late cameos - he still can't get onto the pitch.

And correct me if I've forgotten something - but I don't think there is anyone on this forum that's scored less goals or made less assists for Tottenham than he has.

Is he a bad player? He's clearly got some ability and may well flourish elsewhere. But for £25m + a first team player - this has been a disaster of a signing.
