All football fans are the same but we are consistently amongst the worst at pre judging players.

Depends how far back you go.

Modric - lightweight and will never make it
Bale - loses every time he plays and will never make it
Kane - (after missing a pen in a Europa game) - hopeless, will never see him again and championship at best
Kulusevski after first game - slow and ponderous, not worth another game

Gill - Lightweight and presumably will never make it!

With Kulu it wasn't even a full game. It was after 60 mins iirc ?

Football fans eh?

Thought he did well. Always on the move and always trying to make stuff happen. Beautiful ball for Kane's second too. I expect he'll be loaned out again though and we'll still look for a Deki backup.

One thing that confuses me about players like this is that we hear all the moaning about "a bunch of cloggers" but then we get a player like Gil that has things he needs to improve on sure, he's 21, but can in no way be described as a clogger, and people want to bin him off.

If Conte is starting to trust him thats great for us as he offers something different from our other wide attackers.

With that, I can agree, And that is again all offensive. I am really just saying we should expect more from a player that we in practice paid 35-40m and has 100k/w if I'm not misinformed. That is what we should rate him on in my opinion, Same money as Lo Celso and we slaughtered him as a fanbase when he had a super first season under Mourinho.
Yeh don’t disagree. He’s not played a full 90 minutes for us yet and has mostly only had brief cameos where he hasn’t really had a chance to adapt. Doesn’t surprise me that he’d looked more at home in European cameos that Premier League cameos. I think what yesterday showed was that first half his flaws were exposed and 2nd half he adapted and managed to mask those flaws by not squaring up as much. If he can continue to progress and show the clear qualities he has then he’ll be worth the 35m even if that just ends up being us selling him to someone else. But I think we utilize him 2nd half of the season because he can offer something different. Even just his constant movement and getting into unusual gaps should help the other forwards.

It was the 5th Round FA Cup tie against Brighton last season, the thread is still there for anyone to see. He came on as a sub and people were calling him slow and clunky within about 5 minutes. In fairness a lot of people have admitted to jumping on him way too quickly.

Ohh, and he almost got 2 assists in a 30 minute cameo...

He was really good. I didn't get why he was being used so sparingly when we needed a spark in other games when our players were knackered/woefully out of form. I like Conte but it's annoying when fans defend all of his decisions to the hilt. I think he's been wrong on this one. If Gil was good enough for La Liga then he's definitely capable of being of some use in the premier league even if his long term plans are best fulfilled elsewhere.

The PL is much more about pace of the game rather than strength as such imo. You can get away with being slight as long as you shimmy away from challenges quickly and or play quick one touch passes. Gil did more of that last night, he was much more alert mentally when the ball arrived at his feet, and quicker than the Palace defenders. When you do that, you either get away from defenders or draw a foul, as opposed to just being muscled off the ball legally.

The only bad spell he had was when Palace started to put pressure on us in the first half, unsurprisingly really.

Despite scoring two goals and being a proven club legend, we forget Kane had a spell in the game where he kept losing the ball cheaply but Gil gets knocked off a few times and he’s shite. Players just need a chance to get used to the environment, he’s a tidy player who has needed more minutes than he’s had up to now.

He is different to our other players, we really lack a creative midfielder centrally, that is evident with the game yesterday. We really miss Bentacur.

Seems a real confidence player. Pompy next game up is a terrific opportunity to carry on and play with belief

Lovely reception by Conte on substitution.

Liking the boy more.
Doesn't hide
Doesn't lie down
or exaggerate when fouled
Nice weight of pass.
Let me down though.
I had him as first scorer.

Our day will come
And we'll have everything
We'll share the joy
with the whole of SC

Yeah but apart from the 9 champions leagues and 30+ other trophies, Balon d'or, the England goal scoring record, Spurs & Premier league goal scoring records (likely) what have any of them really done?

We had a little glimpse of what Gil can do yesterday. Today I played golf with some mates, two of whom spoke to me specifically about Gil and what a player he looks. They were baffled when I said that in general supporters attitude seems to be he is not good enough, too lightweight etc. Up until now my only view on Gil, like many other youngsters, is that I want to see him play. We need to be giving youngsters a chance, a proper chance, to develop. As a club we need to find pathways to the first team. Managers have to buy into this or they should go elsewhere.

If he can just keep improving that toughness and packing on a bit more muscle, he’s a bit of a unicorn of a player. A skillfull ball carrier who can also pllay with his head up and create intelligently. You usually get either one or the other, but not both.

Let’s hope he keeps making inroads.

Haven't seen anyone state it yet but Conte said;
- He can rely on Sarr, Gil and the young players.
- They really worked with them during WC
- He wants them to stay and not go out on loan.
Nice. Wish he’d add Spence to that list but nice to see these guys being given more of a chance by Conte.

I have to admit with Gil I’ve always seen a player in there he just looks natural with the way he dribbles and sees the game but I’ve doubted if he’d be physical enough to suit the PL well bit by bit he is showing more and more the potential he has to be a top PL player for us.

I love his energy and creativity and passion, he is a throwback winger and very much a player in the Spurs mould. Really hope he can kick on now and get regular minutes as our 5th AM option. We still need to sign one more but Gil should be getting starts and minutes over Lucas every day of the week now.

Nice little analysis on him during MOTD too:
