Perhaps the figures involved will have changed his perspective but Eriksen extended his contract by one year at Ajax specifically so that they'd get a transfer fee for him. He's not the type to leave a club who has contributed to his development with nothing to show for it, but then the money being bandied about is in a completely different realm now than it was then. But what if a player doesn't want to be sold when he has one year left on his deal? If a player goes into the last year of their contract with their mind set on all the options a free transfer would afford them, there's not really much that the club can do to make them go beforehand.
