Thing is, unless we got an offer from Barca or Real he wasn't leaving anyway ... People will grind their teeth over this but he literally held the club to ransom - it was all on his terms.

Not according to his agent. This was 4 days after Champions League Final.

"Last season there were three clubs, two English and one foreign, interested in paying a huge amount to Spurs.
“For the club it was then a no-go area and for Christian not a must-have. I have the impression we are in a new situation now.”

The club have had plenty of opportunity to sell, this was on us.

Unless that foreign club were one of the Spanish giants then this is still moot, otherwise why then make such a crucial point of it after the fact?

If we had sold into the prem there would have been fucking uproar among the whole fan base.

The Eriksen stuff in the guardian seems strong. I suppose the question is do we let go and make some money now or use him until the end of the season. I think the article in the gaurdian suggests the former.

Disagree it's on us. It's not really any singular person or entities fault.

I mentioned this idea a day or so ago; after Poch, Kane and Dele re-upped, Poch had dinner with CE in Copenhagen...I used to think it was a contract extension pitch but that shifted this summer once I saw his agents quotes following the CL final. Maybe Poch was trying to convince CE and Levy not to make a move.

A beat writer for Spurs (can't remember who but thinking Kilpatrick or Law) said the three clubs rumored were United, Chelsea and PSG. Maybe Levy and Poch weren't keen on strengthening direct rivals. Maybe PSG didn't really move the needle for Eriksen.

If you read Eriksen's interviews dating back to Ajax as a teenager, his career path has always been planned. He did the same thing to Ajax that he's done to us, using his expiring contract as leverage to force a move in order to follow his plan. The difference was Ajax sold the summer before.

Sure in hindsight you can say the club should have played their hand differently but there are valid and acceptable reasons for them to potentially have made the decisions they did.

Well reportedly (Alistair Gold) the clubs were Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United.
So guess that changes things, a large bid from one of the clubs, and we refused to sell.
No wonder he is playing half-hearted, and I repeat, this is on the club.
We have lost 100m over this, and possibly lot more as could well be a year out of Champions League due to not having decent motivated playmaker.

No wonder he is pissed with us.
Link, I can't find it, I can find a whole lot of (supposed) bids in the range from £40 to about £60 mill for him in the last year - £100 mill not so much.

If we're really after a striker, Eriksen to Inter and Gabigol to us would be decent business and could entice them to get Eriksen now.

"We should have sold him"
"This is on Levy"
"Mistake by the club"

blah blah etc.

Nice time machines out in force here.

If we sold him and he did well for another team it'd be "typical Levy" and "club has no ambition" and so on.
If we sold him, we might not have made it to a CL final which, despite losing, has done our reputation good in attracting players imo.
We might have finished 5th instead of 4th.

We didn't pay a lot for him, and we don't seem to pay him a lot due to his lack of desire to sign new contracts, so we've had enough value for 5 years even if he leaves for free. That's not to say I'd play him if he sits out the 2nd half of the season, just that I don't necessarily believe that we should or would change anything with a time machine (minus this summer just gone).

Yes we could have replaced him, but if you imagine we replaced him with NDombele and Lo Celso, it's no real difference, so we probably couldn't have done so two years ago either.

Biggest issue we have had, if we've known for years, is Poch allegedly turning down young players who could have replaced him by now.

C'est la vie, we move on, we don't have time machines.

Bingo.

Jack Pitt-Brooke said on his podcast recently that the club nearly sold Rose to Chelsea in '17 for £55M. Imagine what the fallout would have been had that gone through after already selling Walker earlier in the summer. In hindsight it would have been amazing business!

It's pointless to overly scrutinize these decisions, especially when you are privy to so little info.

To echo what others said, no-one, including probably our other key players would have wanted Eriksen to be sold 18 months ago. We were still in a transition to big club status on the european stage at the time and selling Eriksen would have sent completely the wrong message. It felt like we broke that glass ceiling with our summer business to be fair, regardless of how wrong it has gone since.

This almost panned out perfectly anyway, he almost signed a new deal in the summer per Herc.

Huge opportunity losing him on a free, but may have to just be one we have to take on the chin. I wanted us to be stronger by holding on to key players so I'm not going to attack the club for doing so on Eriksen.

This transfer saga with eriksen has taught me a lot.
In the end the club is getting fucked. Regardless of his performances passed seasons. The 80 odd mil we could have got for him a time ago could have been used. Probably would have been in less of a mess than we are now.

goes to show sometimes we have to lose high profile players here and there to cash in while we still can.

Hope the club also learns from this as well.

It would have only been amazing business if we replaced adequately. Walker was good business for a player that wanted to move on. We bought fucking Aurier and passed up opportunities to sign better players.

To be more fair, we replaced him with Trippier and Aurier as an option, with KWP also there.

Rip the band aid off and just let him go on a free now. Best for all involved.

Would be useful if we could give another club Eriksen in exchange for either a small amount and someone first-team worth on loan, or for someone on loan with a favourable option. Maybe an Isco/Bale (just examples) type of player that is decent but not in their manager's plans.

That would soften the blow.
