If he is capable of aggression without the non tactical fouls, wouldn't that be the best of both worlds?
Well sure, but no one is perfect. When you're that aggressive then you're clearly walking a fine line sometimes and on occasion you'll go over. This has always been the case for players who play on the edge.

It's just not realistic to expect him to keep all of his aggression and competitiveness on just and only the right side of that fine line.

Was what he did sensible? No. Was it a red? Also no. Does he do it every week? No.

Surely Cucurella needs to take some of the flak for having hair like a poodle in the first place

if he had a Graeme Souness approved short back and sides this would never have happened
If he had that he’d probably look like Borat.

How was it a critical juncture? We were a goal down with a corner on 95 mins, pretty much one of the last chances of the game. It wasn't like we were defending a corner 1 goal up or level.
Also var saw it and didn't deem it an offence so not sure what the issue is.
there is a time and place for shithousery. if the ref observed it real time, do you think he would have called it? and the conjecture i've read to date suggests that VAR only has an either or choice - red card or let it go. if it was worthy of a yellow, it should have been called real time. The referees i know and i've read all thought it was a foul and hte only question was a red or yellow. again, if you are okay with those kinds of plays at the end of game when you have seconds left, we have a different understanding of what intelligent play is. cheers

Fully agree on no one is perfect and the fine line you discuss. The goal is to get him better at walking that fine line with more precision. More importantly, it's important to know when you can't go over the line from a tactical perspective. And as it stands, he is probably going to scrutinized more in the future which ultimately will work against his ability to be aggressive.

Again. I love the guy. I would love his aggression with Ledley's intelligence when it comes to tactical fouls. Nothing more, nothing less.

The ref was looking directly at it in real time

Romero is the sort of guy who would poleaxe you from behind in the high street, 20 years after you took his crayon at preschool

It sure looked that way but then i read this from football london so i'm not sure what the referee saw.

He doesn't see it, but should VAR have seen it? And, should there have been a red card? Should there have been a free-kick given to Chelsea? And, therefore the equalising goal shouldn't have stood because it came from the resulting corner?

I think VAR should've intervened. I'm not sure the referee sees it. I think he looks down, but I think he looks down instinctively. I actually think that he's watching the flight of the ball, watching where the ball is going, watching where he thinks it's going to land on the dropping zone. He does look down but I think it's already happened so he can't judge what has happened. I think VAR has the perfect look because when we saw the replay yesterday, as soon as I saw it I said to a guy next to me, 'I think he's going to get a red card here'. He's pulled him down by the hair. I anticipated the VAR to send Anthony Taylor to the screen. I know for a fact if Anthony had gone to the screen it would have been a red card and a free-kick to Chelsea.

Unbelievable the amount of people defending Romero in here

Is he really good, yes. Is he World class, no chance

What he is though is a fucking idiot that will eventually cost us dearly unless Conte gets him to cut the stupid shit out

Shithousary is doing stuff you never get pulled up for. He’s a walking red card atm!

His and our luck will run out soon…..

He is winning us more points than he will loose us if he gets a red card at some point, he's not an idiot.

To be fair he steps very close to or over the line most weeks. He grabbed someone’s throat in pre season for example.

Look I love the guy and his passion and aggression but he just needs to tone it down a tad as we don’t want him getting not only a red but a decent ban due to violent conduct

To be clear, what some of us think is for him to know when to foul and when his aggression could turn out counter productive to the team's goals.

The reason the hair pulls are stupid is because
  • It occurred at a critical juncture of the game
  • Everyone saw it and it will further his reputation which means refs will have him on a shorter chain while watching him even closer.
Eliminating that part of his repertoire is not the same as attempting to coach out the aggression. Love the guy but whether it is a loss due to a red card or a loss due to gifting a goal to the opposition with a stupid backpass or whatever, points are points are points. If he is capable of aggression without the non tactical fouls, wouldn't that be the best of both worlds?

If he’d got sent off yesterday for pulling a blokes hair at a corner with a minute left and it cost us a point, he’s an idiot ?‍♂️
