I must be watching a different player because the one I see usually lacks confidence under pressure, is hesitant in possession and mainly attempts sideways passes. Of course a 'Long pass' (more than 25 yards) could still be from the centre of the pitch out to the full back who is hugging the touchline. Would like to see the stats for passes more than 25 yards forward (that is different from forward passes more than 25 yards)

He's not an elite ball-playing defender, ofc he's playing less passes than Toby but saying that he can't pass is dumb.

To more context, stats for PL this season, all positions.

Short passes(fewer than 5 yards):
30% passing accuracy for Davinson vs 36.8% for Toby vs 21.1% for Jan

Medium passes(fewer than 25 yards more than 5)
92.8% passing accuracy for Davinson vs 93.8% for Toby vs 91.1% for Jan

Long passes(more than 25 yards)

78.4% passing accuracy for Davinson(329 attempted) vs 71.5% for Toby(670) vs 74.3% for Jan(276)
Well, maybe I am dumb then? :)
And I hope you don’t believe I meant can’t pass as in «ever hit a Spurs player». That would be weird. It is just a figure of speech - meining he is a terrible passer. You can show me all the statistics in the world, but I believe what I see with my own eyes... Hope I am entitled to my opinion Even if it’s «dumb»... I am sure some would agree with me and others don’t....

I like Dave, I think his defending of 1v1s is the best of our centre backs, he’s very quick on recovery and he has well timed challenges. His big issue for me is that he, like Toby, is quite reactive, he’s not one for attacking a cross but instead tries to anticipate where it’s headed and position himself to collect, much as Toby does. Vertonghen was the guy who actually attacked a cross, which is why nobody ever seemed to run across him and punish us like with the other two. Sanchez and Toby are great against all the sides who’ll try to play in between them and pass their way through, but as a pairing will always come unstuck against balls into the box. If Sanchez could get a bit more Michael Dawson about him he’d be pretty much impregnable, as he has the physical gifts for this. If not, he should be paired with more of a ‘stopper’ who likes to stop a dangerous ball before it becomes dangerous. Tanganga could well be that player.

Normally, if a post starts quoting statistics, I move on to the next post.

However, I must question the stats above in respect of passes of less than 5 yards.

If I am reading it correctly, it states than only 1 in 3 short passes for Sanchez and Alderweireld are successful and in respect of Vertonghen, it is only 1 in 5.

As they are defenders, these passes will be, predominantly, made in their own half. If this is correct, Lloris must be superman.

Find it weird that this argument is happening after what was one of his best displays this season. He read the danger really well yesterday and made a number of good challenges and clearances.

He's still got a mistake in him and I don't think he's quite the player we hoped he would be, but on his day he's an excellent defender and I think we need to give him more time.

Sanchez is our best defender. He has been the most solid all season. His job first and foremost is to defend and he gets that. I always worry when he is not in the team

I am the guilty one of bad timing of critizising him. But I agree with much you say.

However, is it good enough that yesterday was one of his best displays?

Becuase I am pretty sure I can go back and find several mistakes (minor probably).
I Get that he is Young and we all wanted him to be the next big thing.

But we are not a small club anymore and cannot wait year after year for players to maybe reach their potensial.

and what is his potensial? With so Restricted basic skills he most likely will never be «all that».

I really liked this signing, and had a lot of hope of him and Foyth - but my eyes clearly see that this is not a world class player, Even in potensial

Why is he being criticised yet Alderweireld gets none especially since Toby is the experienced defender and Sanchez has been far better than him this season?

Some of you lot really peee me off ❤guy has overall this season been defensively sound, which is his priority. You watch him for Columbia he is a beast.
Toby, Jan for example has had a few bad games. Give the lad a friggin break. He will develop under JM, who rates him highly btw

Really fancy him to become an impenetrable wall once he fully matures as a defender he's got all the physical tools. It's just about putting it all together.

I just love that we have him and Tanganga at the club. Two young powerful defenders with years left in the tank and time to grow into quality players

giphy (3).gif

There's like 3 threads you could use this gif for at the moment and they would all be equally valid... Just incessant yelling at each other about our own players and being mad at each for not being as positive or negative on a player as we are.

My guess is that a lot of those are interceptions, touches etc. that is counted like passes. Not that I know, but you rarely make a proper pass than is 1-2 yards.

I'm not sure him being a beast for Columbia really helps Spurs, just a shame he's not been a beast for Spurs !

I just find he’s easily bullied and struggles up against big powerful strikers and runners. He’s not very good on the ball either.

He’s clearly not as good as we’d hoped he’d be, but he’s still got time to develop.

We should sell him and buy another player, copy paste this in every thread - it'll be Bergwijn's turn soon no doubt.
