Huh?

We’ve not conceded a goal in the last 10 hrs he’s been on the pitch! Absolutely no problem with him starting at all three days. He’s come on leaps and bounds. Credit to him and conte and coaching staff
People have disagreed with my post, but I'm confused if I'm honest. Who does he come in for? Because I wouldn't have him in for any of the usual three CBs. And although he's made fantastic progress, he's very average with the ball which massively impacts our ability to play out from the back.

I think people must have misunderstood "Would never like to see him starting for us, but he's a great option to bring in when we have injuries." as meaning you don't like to see him starting even when someone else is unavailable (like today). ?‍♂️

I think having read it back it could be the way you’ve worded it as you’ve said “I’d never like to see him starting for us” people have probably taken that as you don’t want him to play for us but you’ve then said he is good when we have injuries etc so I get what you mean and do agree that I’d rather not see him starting ahead of Romero Dier Davies but when we are rotating or have injuries he’s a perfectly good and capeable stand in. ??

Yes, to clarify, what I meant was I don't want him starting week in week out, but I'm more than happy for him to start when he have injuries.

I’ve come round to this thinking. I wasn’t keen on even having him deputise bur he’s much more able in a back three, and he seems an integral part of the squad morale- from all the behind the scenes footage I’ve seen, he’s very much a popular figure. Just don’t expect him to be assured or especially effective with his distribution

With this formation and midfielders being outnumbered plus Lloris being bad at passing even if he could pass better it wouldn't change too much. His options are Royal and Lloris, often can't pass to midfielders since they are 2v3, long balls to forwards always have a low % anyway (unless you are TAA) plus teams will play with 3 at the back to counter Conte.

Even Romero can't do too much in that situation. Sooner or later we will gain control of midfield and start dominating some games and have actual buildup, like second half of last match, but right now in this setup it's almost impossible, even if we had prime Maldini, Pique and Toby at the back.

And he did more for our buildup than Dier and Davies against NFO. There were couple of moments in second half where Romero would send a diagonal for Perišić/Son and Sanchez instead opted for a side pass to Hojbjerg, he is limited in that regard but still great as a backup.

He’s also a great sub to have off the bench when ahead. Good ball-winner, strong in the air, and does fine when asked to simply defend.
I'm not so sure about the strong in the air bit. Standard clearance heading of the ball I'll give you, but as @slartibartfast previously said he can't read the flight of a ball when it's dropping over him. For someone of his size he misses the first ball far too often in a 1v1 and luckily has the pace to recover and hoof away the second ball. That being said, he's been solid deputising for Romero distribution aside, but clean sheets are invaluable so keep it up big Dave ?

I think Dav is doing g a great job, we have our best defender out and there has been no drop in points (maybe more in terms of overall team performance) and that is exactly what title winning teams need.

Yes, he’s not as good on the ball as others, but if he was, we wouldn’t have the others, and we’d have a worse player as first reserve.

Always thought there was a good defender in there, and he always tries. Conte is showing how great a man manager he is getting so much out of players who aren’t maybe first picks.

Dav will end up having an unbelievable goals conceded per X mins record, without really standing out. Which probably suits everyone, so let’s all get aboard the good vibes train!

Much better player than he is given credit for particularly in a back 3. Solid.

I actually think the playing in a back 3 can’t be overstated how much it helps him.

Let’s be honest in a back 2 he was pretty bad.

I’m glad to see he doesn’t look so panicky and rushed nowadays. He’s still poor in possession but defensively he’s been great. I think he could feel unfortunate to find himself back on the bench when Romero is fit again.

Like all players he’s much better under Conte.

I had all but written him off so it’s great to see him playing well.

I think he can improve defensively as with more experience he'll read situations even better. I don't think he'll ever be more than he currently is with the ball at his feet.

So much easier to look good in a back 3 compared to a back 2. DS as undoubtedly improved, his distribution leaves a bit to be desired, but even that has improved.
A good back up, that is pricing steady when called upon, let's hope he keeps up this run of form under Conte.

He used to look good in the centre of a back 3, admittedly he did have Jan and Toby either side of him but still I think he can function as the back up to Dier with it looking unlikely we’ll be bringing in another CB. Lenglet competing with Davies and Sanchez backing up Romero and Dier isn’t the worst situation we could have been in. No point wasting money on a CB, just wait for a really top class one to be available. We’ve been pretty solid defensively so far this season against some really tricky sides.

Sometimes we get Davinson. Today we got Dave.

But he's been more the former of late so maybe he deserves a break for that mad mad 15 seconds.

I just wish Lloris would stop playing out to him when he could have gone to Lenglet who looks quality on the ball, sadly Davinson is simply a way to give the ball back to the opposition.
