I know Emerson is not everyone's cup of tea, but I think Conte rates him. And, it seems like he gets on with everyone in the club - and that kind of player is important in a squad.

I hope he continues to progress as a WB, but I will be very surprised if he is sold this summer - even if/when we bring in a RWB.

Yep, especially in big games where we need to a bit more solid at the back… Emerson is the perfect man for the job. It makes sense to have at least one player who is defensively sound in a RB/RWB role. Ideally we need 4 attack minded wing backs and one versatile player… that can be Emerson.

If only he could cross a ball he would be some player . That said as others have alluded to, he seems to be really popular squad member and there are definitely worse options than him out there.

Here’s his Betis highlights - he’s a rock defensively and also provides several assists. When ‘instinctive’ he can as shown in his highlights reel put in some very dangerous crosses. His weakness as shown last season is either when he’s flat footed and doesn’t know what to do or if he’s got time and space to think only to either make the wrong decision or massively over hit his cross.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up staying if tanganga goes . Could probably cover right sided central defence if needs be .

his game is better suited to probably not venturing over the half way line where he tends to have brain farts

He’s very athletic — there’s no question about that.

Taking interest if a full Conte preseason can mold him into the type of player he demands

I personally really like Emerson! He improved a lot near the end of the season. I read somewhere he employed two psychological coaches to help him. Hopefully he can continue and prove everyone wrong, it was his first season in a brand new system.

I can see us having 5 wing/full backs especially with the injury record of Sess. I imagine Doherty being the more likely to cover on the left if we stick with 3 right sided players and ever need cover for the left. I guess Emerson is simply preferred over Reguilon but also Reguilon has his injury record too so along with Sess would be a concern. I also really like the Brazil connection we have and makes me feel more inclined to keep Moura even if we get another attacking midfielder, Moura adds something different and always works 100% for the team.

I’ll always have time for players who either want to improve themselves with genuine room for improvement, give their all for the team, or have been dealt a pretty shit hand. Emerson falls into all three categories. Arrived after the season started, young player who’s having his first experience in a new country and culture with communication/language barriers, thrown straight in pretty much into a dysfunctional Nuno side. Has to learn a completely new role just a few months later under a manager who needs results over everything. In and out the team, criticized by fans, only to be forced back into the side due to injuries. If his level wasn’t good enough and/or he wasn’t up to the fight I would’ve understood completely. But he always fought and was such an important player in us making top 4. He was fantastic the last two months of the season and really stepped up. Improved within Conte’s ideas. And that’s before talking about how he reportedly gets outside psychological help. And it’s clear he only wants Conte to improve him and do whatever it takes to make it. Seems like a super nice and positive guy. I’ve also witnessed genuine class in his final delivery in Spain over two seasons. And fairly consistent quality too. Tbh it’s the issues he had in that department in England that’s really surprised me. Because that was a real strength at Betis. I really do have all the time in the world for players like him as I said. If he does stay I have hope and confidence he’ll only get better where Conte needs him to be. If he leaves, him not making it here is 100% down to the circumstances more so than the player. I have no doubt about that. But do hope he stays and proves many wrong because he’s such an easy person to root for.

He seems genuinely happy to be here, played well in the last few games of the season. Seems like a good guy, if he’s happy to be a squad player then we should keep him imo.

Yeah, I’ve been wondering myself if he might not be a good RCB aka Walker for England. Then you could have Sanchez focus on the center. He’s good defensively, mobile for a cb, and his offensive instincts fit. Can he pass well enough?

Would just need to play it simple to bentancar or Bissoma

I was generally in favour of selling, but if he's happy to stay then I suppose it actually makes a lot of sense to keep him around.

He'll be out best defensive RWB even if add Spence, he has a good attitude, and if we have a ton of injuries it means we can move Doherty to LWB and still have two RWBs options.

Given Perisic is probably the most nailed of all of our wing backs next season, selling Regi seems less of a risk.

I think the reason why Conte is fine with getting an unproven Spence in is because he’s still fine with Doherty and Royal as options so that we can take a chance on a talent in an otherwise important position for his system.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Royal convinced Conte of giving him another chance after Doherty went down injured as Emerson was more than solid for us in those final two months.

You lot are too sentimental. Yes towards the end he did well defensively but before that he wasn’t even that good of a defender especially positionally. I remember more than once he played the opponents attacker onside by being further back than our other defenders. When Conte had to tweak the system because Emerson was ( for want of a better word) a liability in the attacking 3rd he did ok.
He’s not a rwb and never will be. If we get a decent offer he should be sold.

I think there will likely be moments next season where we don’t need a RWB we need a more defensive right back to cover. I don’t know about Spence but I sure as hell do prefer Emerson over Doherty to defend.

If we had a new RWB I think he would have been left behind with Reggie tbh

We don't have that many players who could command a decent fee. Depends what else we can do in the market

Maybe. We'll probably never know. He's here to stay unless a great offer for him comes in. No need to sell so best position on a talented player.

I dont think many question his desire, effort and defensive abilities. The biggest issue is his attacking qualities, he really struggles in the final third in every aspect.

But he is still young and can get better. He's certainly not the worst squad option at all as he excels against teams like Liverpool.

I'd even go as far as to say if we were able to bring in an elite Rwb like Hakimi which won't happen, I think it would be Docherty up for sale and not Emerson.
