I'm a little upset that people seem to be so willing to toss Fazio aside. I really like him as a no-nonsense defender.

That being said, I do prefer Dier. Quicker straight line, more agile, more assured on the ball bringing it up the pitch to start an attack. I like the Cahill comparisons but I think he also has Ivanovic in him the way he can get up the pitch and aid the attack. He will be a pivotal defender for us down the stretch.

Fazio oozes nonesense every time he plays.

Dier is better and with Dier next to him, Vertonghen will improve also. Complete no brainer.

Fazio is a great option to have in the PL when we're facing the Carroll and Crouchs of this world. No coincidence we've been far more solid from set pieces with him in the side.

Dier is also very dominant in the air too though. He looks to to be our future at the back.

They haven't had the sternest of tests so far during games I admit, but I don't think its any coincidence that since Fazio went out of the team we all of a sudden aren't getting barbequed by the ball over the top any more. That scary susceptibility seems to have gone, apart from the West Brom game when he came back in...

We're far more solid at the back with Dier in there than we are with Fazio. No debating it for me

After last night, particularly at the end. Future captain? Has a real Ledley King/John Terry hybrid about him.

And to paraphrase his post match interview "you aren't a real centre back until you've broken your nose a couple times"

Legend in the making.

Dier is promising but think he could have closed down markovic quicker for his goal and Dier should have known balotelli was right behind him when he scored cos he had his hand on his back. Seems a little bit dopey sometimes

Lots of promise but lots to learn also. Reminds me of Ledley circa 2002 - a few mistakes but you can see the quality already.

Also, I had no idea he had so much pace! It's deceptive, doesn't look like he should be quick.

Saved us on quite a few occasions last night, thought he was quality and never knew he had that pace. Future is bright.

Only a kid in a position where players don't peak until late 20s. I can't even think of any CB's his age, performing at his level.

I like him every time he gets to play at CB for us. He's developing nicely. Not afraid to get and be physical with any player, regardless of reputation. He times challenges well and with JV next to him should continue his progression well. Fell asleep for the winner last night, but he wasn't the only one at fault for that move.

Overall, he's doing really well. A great find.

This kid has everything what it needs. Pace, height, good reading of the game, can play with the ball. Lots of defenders only have one or two of these attributes, he can be a complete player. Just 21!!

Almost as quick as deadly Ledley. All he needs now is to position himself better and he's the real deal.

If we head the keepers kick to safety that goal doesn't happen.

Agreed about the Mario goal. But allowing Lallana the opportunity to put that ball in should have been stopped. It could just have easily ended up as an own goal

Even in a loss, it sounds like he played very well and extended highlights showed his pace and tackling ability to me. He seemed to hold his own against Sturridge which is a good thing. Give him a run with Vertonghen down the stretch and things will be very good for us this season and the seasons to come!

He will be a fantastic player, has a lot to learn though as expected for his age. Incredible potential.

Varane....

I can think of quite a few that are better, but Dier is still a very good CB for his age.

I think the future at CB could be Dier Veljkovic.

I'm not impressed with Vertonghen though of late he along with Dembele have improved.
