Sorry he is in the u21 list, didn't realize his surname is Carvalho....
Apologies for going slightly off topic, but I don't think a whole new thread would be appropriate, but I have a question about Portuguese names.

I've noticed a number of Portuguese players / football professionals that seem to have a different last name than the one they use. So Mourinho's full name is José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix, Gedson's last name seems to be Carvalho. Is that a common thing with Portuguese people? Also is there a connection with Brazil (via colonialist history) whereby many of their players choose a different name than their legal name? Any Portugal experts out there who can cast light on this?

Again, sorry for going off-topic.

I was intrigued too so started reading this. Haven’t finished yet but it’s interesting so thought I’d share.

Didnt really make much sense to omit him from Europa squad when there was zero intention to play him in the league. Would have made more sense but can understand the controversy if someone like Sissoko was omitted as he is more likely to play in the league

Rumours of us considering ending his loan spell early in january.

Makes a whole lot of sense.

Aye, I can’t see what real benefit there is in keeping him. He’s behind Højbjerg, Lo Celso, Ndombele, Sissoko, Winks and probably Dele for three positions, has no chance of getting a sniff at AM and has Aurier, Doherty and Tanganga ahead of him at right back. If we’re in a position in any competition where we need to use a fourth (rb) or seventh (cm) or eighth (am) choice player then I’d far prefer see minutes go to the likes of White and Clarke.

I really rate him from what I've seen but theres just no room in the squad. Shame. Feel sorry for him. Someones gonna get a gem and I hope he does really well wherever he ends up. Feel a bit shit about how he's been dealt with to be honest.

Think he was just a punt and to bump up our squad as we had a bit of an injury crises.

He wasnt given a fair crack imo

Never once did enough in the times he was given any sort of crack though. And I'm not talking about any goals or assists or great contribution, but at least to me he showed nothing or very little to even be slightly encouraged by.

According to this his loan has been ended

The hypothesis had already been admitted by Luís Filipe Vieira and will even materialize. Midfielder Gedson ends the loan at Tottenham earlier and joins Jorge Jesus' squad in January.
This does not, however, prevent Benfica from continuing in the market in search of a defensive midfielder who can also play the role of position 8.
In the past few days, Benfica and Tottenham have agreed to the early end of the 21-year-old's transfer.

Abit wasted, I thought he has some potential and was great when deployed as the RWB in one of the friendlies. But also can't possibly play him there. Unlucky there is no slot for him in the squad to even play in the cup games.

Bit of a funny one all round, really. Reminds me a bit of the Pau Lopez loan a few years back. I guess we must have seen something in him - either that or it was just an extra body in at a time when we had a lot of injuries.
