You can't compare him to common folk though. He has enough money to take a taxi every day of his life and he is looked up to by millions of kids. No one gives a shit if you or I do it but it's different when you are in the public eye.
I disagree. My kid loves him, when he gets home from school I’ll explain what has happened and we’ll call him a dick. If the public just stopped caring what famous people do in their private lives the world would be a better place.

Christ on a bike there is a load of self righteous people on here. He was stupid, that’s it.
Everyone here has made mistakes, if you haven’t you’re lying.
Get over yourselves.

Self righteous? With the limit as high as it is in the UK and actually being over that it's not a simple "mistake". It's an incredible lack of judgment and honestly it could be said that if anything he was lucky he wasn't in an accident like Marcos Alonso.
I condemn this kind of behaviour with all of my being and a grown man, professional athlete especially, should know better.

Dude he's not 22 years old - he's a man in his 30s who should know better.

He's also a professional athlete so shouldn't be getting drunk during the season anyway. In fact I would guess most top players don't drink at all.
Doubt he was drunk, couple of pints and your over the limit.

I’m not condoning his actions at all but some of the reactions on here are laughable at best.

I don't really care about excuses. If he was drinking and driving at 2.30 in the morning I don't really care about him being just over the limit or not.
Being a professional athlete with training the next morning he should not have been drinking at all, period.

As some have stated, he is still innocent until proven guilty but this is pretty damning and from my point of view, absolutely unforgivable.

No it's not. The facts will come out and law will take it's course. He will receive the punishment his actions merit under the law of the land the same as anyone else and after that has taken place he will have paid his debt to society. This is how it works and in my opinion is a better system than hysterical hyperbolic keyboard warriors organising lynch mobs from their fainting couches.

Can we just get one thing straight, we do not know he was drunk. Yes he was very clearly over the limit to drive, which is inexcusable and wrong whichever way you look at it, but until we know the facts, he may have only had a couple of glasses of wine and been over the limit. While this is obviously against the law, 2 glasses of wine does not make a fit, grown man drunk. Idiotic for getting behind the wheel, yes, but drunk, no.

Nonsense. This isn't a case of the public prying into his private life. The idiot commited a crime and rightfully will get punished. Drink driving is a serious crime, if many of us did it we could lose our jobs. Don't underplay the severity of it because you don't care.

It's, what, 5 days before the game though. I don't think that's a big issue, unless he was blind drunk obviously. That part of the situation all depends on the team policy on going out and all that sort of thing. Perhaps that will be addressed in a club statement.

4 days I believe. Even if he hasn't broken any official rules/curfew, they seemingly had training this morning and I cant accept that staying out till 2am (drink involved, or not) is the way to prepare for that. You might get away with doing it against the lesser teams, but this week we're gearing up to one of the major fixtures in the season..... I'd just expect every player to be going the absolute extra mile in terms of preparation. Especially the captain.

Hugo doesn't drive for a living. So it's up for the courts to decide punishment not his employer.

Though I think we should just strip him of the captaincy. Why do we need a world class, World Cup winning keeper and captain at our club? Let's smash his confidence and ensure his performance levels drop. Then we can all moan about him a bit more. He could've played for any club in the world but decided to remain loyal to us...fuck being loyal back to him if he has issues in his private life.

Let's play Gazzaniga then we can all get our pitchforks sharp and ready for when the young, inexperienced keeper makes errors.

2 glasses of wine (About half a bottle) don't get you over the limit in the UK if you're a fully grown adult male.

Tell that to families who has lost loved ones due to "only a couple of pints". There are plenty.

Absolutely. Just one death a year from drink driving is too many. I personally believe everyone caught should be charged with attempted murder although i understand that's a strong view. For too long people have seen drink driving as a laugh, it makes me furious.

I’m not condoning his actions. I am condoning peoples over the top reactions on here.
No mate, that's exactly what you are doing by saying that reactions condemning the act of drinking and driving is over the top.

Here we go again. I'm confused why people think committing a public crime has anything to do with his private life?

True -no one should be bandying the word 'drunk' around at this stage although your judgment can be impaired even if you aren't actually drunk.

Whilst I obviously don’t condone his actions, seeing Chelsea fans having the pure AUDACITY to say anything about it is really fucking me off.

They literally have a murderer in their team who killed a young girl by drink driving.

I know you can’t judge a fan base based on a small sample of them but i’ve only ever come across Chelsea fans who are either thick, racist or both.

Uhm, no. An employer is perfectly entitled to take action against someone who's committed a criminal offence, compromised their performance, and put them into disrepute.
