There’s a blast from the past. I believe it broke down because we owed them money for Luka’s sell on clause and wanted to include it as part of the deal over the three year period, but they wanted it up front. Something like that.

So happy we've got Ivan in. He may be at the end phase of his career but I think Doherty showed us in the last couple of months of the season that pace isn't necessarily essential in Conte's wing back role. Not that he's lost his pace anyway he was very quick at Inter last year. Very intelligent player who will also have a positive impact on our young players namely Sess fingers crossed he can stay fit. I've rarely been more confident that a signing we've made will be a success.

Seeing as this guy is ambidextrous, is it feasible that should Spence be off the table that we go after a second LWB and use Perisic on the right?

I don't think so.
It was said earlier in the thread that he's very rarely played on the right and at his age, along with his ability on the left, I don't think we should do anything but play him on his preferred side.

We should get a proper RWB or just stick with what we've got.

Im sure he could do a job but I don’t think he’s played on the right much. LWB is where he’s re-invented himself in this latter part of his career. I also wouldn’t be super comfy with our two RWB options being 30+. There’s other RWB’s on the market in case Spence doesn’t happen. Molina or Baku for example.

I wonder if this puts us in a stronger position to sign his compatriot Gvardiol?

No offense, but Years & Years of transfer neglect means some of our fans are “institutionalized” to Levy’s way of thinking …

Perisic is playing pro football for 14 yrs+ and he has played 30 games as Right winger & 4 games as RWB.

He is world class left winger/WB- so let’s keep him there & focus to buy a proper RB/RWB- am sure Paratici & Conte will think same way

Yeah I just don't buy the Perisic RWB idea at all. We've already seen how inflexible Conte can be with player positioning. Despite fans hoping for it, he practicaly never used Bergwijn or Lucas as wing backs, never even considered using Ndombele or Lo Celso in a CM 2 and only ever used Kulusevki as a wing back in an absolute emergency.

Hell, he sent Perisic on loan from Inter in his first season because he didn't even think he would work as a left wing back, let alone a right wing back.

That's not to say Perisic won't be used once or twice as a RWB for 15 mins at the end of a match as a tactical ploy, or cover on the other flank like Doherty did when all our other options were injured, but the idea that we'd sign another LWB with the intention of playing Perisic as a first choice RWB strikes me as 2+2=5 from people who have the horn for Kostic.

Absolutely, I think it's more likely that we won't get a back up for Son and will use Perisic as the backup left winger when needed.

Yeah in a way he'd combine Reguilon and Bergwijn's roles in the squad: first choice LWB and second choice wide forward.

Means we can focus on signing a forward who can cover Kane/RW instead of worrying about a Son backup too.

Not sure how that works in games where Conte will want to sub both the WBs and the WFs as part of his 5 man sub strategy.

We need to sign a forward who can play anywhere across the front. I know some are not fans of Sterling, and I doubt he'd even want to come to us, but he could play with any of our other forwards in a front 3 whilst offering something different to each of them. I'd personally prefer Bale on a short term contract to buy us time, but Sterling would be a very good buy IMO as he offers pace, aggressive / direct running with the ball (more effectively than Moura), and would suit Conte's 'back post' patterns.

Sterling would be great ?

Ideally we would sign someone to cover that position as well (or someone who can play across all front 3 positions) and I'm hoping we do. I just think that if we can't get who Conte wants for that role then as a fall back, we are more likely to use Perisic there than at RWB.

In all honesty I am just happy to sit back and see how the window unfolds, should be a fun one! (y)

I'd prefer someone who can play both up top as a 9 AND cover at RW over a straight up winger/wide player like Sterling or Bale. I know both technically can play as a false 9 but Bale has made it clear he doesn't want to and we don't play Pep-ball so I don't think Sterling would work in that position at Spurs..

I prefer Sterling as a player, but positionally Jesus would make more sense at Spurs has he's a proper number 9 who is very comfortable on the right. Someone like Charles de Ketelaere or Terrier would also work well in these dual roles.

Anyway, we're getting off topic, but unfortunately there isn't really a general transfer thread to talk about this type of thing.
