I'm slightly more positive than that, though not hugely

I think he's an excellent player, but can drift in and out of games - we have too many players like that. And his injury record isn't great.

If we get him, great. If we miss out (which given Newcastle's interest, I think is fairly likely) I don't think it's the end of the world.

He could afford to drift in and out of games at Leicester as he was first on the team sheet. Won't have that luxury if we sign him though. Only Sonny gets that.

If Newcastle are still pushing surely they’re getting encouragement from Maddison’s side?
I'm sure if he wasn't at all interested they wouldn't have kept chasing him since last summer. Tbh tho I think its hard to tell exactly what is going on as Leicester will be doing everything they can to encourage a biding war, even Base could be doing the same in order to get the best deal for their client.

Well I imagine even if it is correct that he would prefer us, that is not the same as only wanting to join us.

We’ll still have to pay up.

Yeah, which makes sense. Maddison and his family etc... may prefer a move to us. Doesn't mean he doesn't have any interest in Newcastle. So of course Newcastle are gonna keep trying/try to make their offer more attractive.

Not sure on reliability of Miguel Delaney but here is an interesting snippet from an article in regards to Newcastle's transfer business:

Maybe the Newcastle owners are being careful regarding FFP but it still seems strange that they are throwing money around likes it going out of fashion to bring players to their national league but are seemingly not going over the top regarding Newcastle's transfer targets. They should be blowing us out of the water and making JM offers he can't refuse.

Could possibly make sense if they have already lost a bit of interest if they are now, in effect, controlling Chelsea via Clearlake. The NUFC acquisition was opportunistic at the value at the time and CFC was not for sale. Wonder if they could sell NUFC and then come out into the open re Chelsea?

Edit: Context = a discussion I had a few months ago with some US investment fund rivals of Clearlake, who couldn't understand how Clearlake had the money to be investing 600m+ on top of the 3-4bn acquisition cost and they had heard rumours of middle east involvement.

Beyond FFP I wonder if part of it is not wanting to get bent over for every deal like Boehly did last summer when it became clear he was an easy mark and would happily pay 20-30m over the asking price at the drop of a hat. If they get a reputation for being tough negotiators then, even despite their massive wealth, they'll at least be taken seriously in the market and not get ripped off.

City are a bit like that at the moment. They get much better value for their transfers than Man United who have a reputation for being terrible at negotiating. Antony alone is more expensive than pretty much every City signing ever and he's shite.

At least we should get a better idea of what is happening here by the end of the week. Hopefully

Don’t Leicester have to sell before y/e on the 30 June anyway? I’m assuming it will be done in the next week. So good news if that is the case as we can get him or move on.

Not if they're anything like Inter Milan who had to raise X amount by X date and didn't do it at all (and then nothing happened).

Yeah I’m always dubious about these “have to sell by x date” stories. These clubs usually find the money from somewhere.

The only time it ever makes sense is to comply with FFP rules or rules enforced by the football governing body of that country. Given Leicester aren't going to be in the PL for the next year then complying with UEFA FFP rules so as not to be banned from European football is a very minor concern and one that they are probably a few hundred million pounds spending short on anyway.
