To bad about the slip, seeing as it marred an absolute masterclass from him, both defensively and offensively.

Someone pointed out that Lukaku gave him a bit of a sneaky nudge and caught him off balance.

Something so right about seeing Jan step out from defence with the ball. Him, Dier and Toby all do that really well and the back 3 allows them to go. It's so hard to mark against and Jan's football brain allows for the quick 1-2's to open teams up. I look forward to seeing us play this more and more and get into a good rhythm. Pray for no injuries to the back four between now and end of the season and this will be a good year.

He was on top form yesterday. Shame about the slip/trip, but that could have happened to any player on the pitch at any time. If a midfielder had done it on the half-way line you'd have forgotten about it in less than a minute.

Our Belgians are in another league to any other CB pair in the PL.

There was a good 15 minute stretch where Jan was just dominating the entire game. It was kind of ridiculous to watch him mop up the Everton forwards only to find moments later he's bypassed their entire team and shooting at the other end. Fantastic display from my favorite CB, style wise at least.

If it wasn't for Kane's goals and Jan's slip, he'd have probably been MotM against Everton, but he's been superb since returning from injury, and has arguably been our best defender this season. In his first season with us he was frequently making runs like the two against Everton and he now seems to have the confidence back to do so again.

Also worth noting, on the basis of the stats in that article, Dier has performed way better than a lot of people have given him credit for this season.

He was incredible against Everton, solid defensively with some fantastic forward runs that I don't think you'd see from many other CB's in the league at all. I think it's harsh to blame him for the slip, he was just very unlucky.

IMO, it is inarguable. He 100% has been our best defender this season. Which is saying alot because Toby, Walker and Rose have all been stellar. They are just more sexier of picks. But Vertonghen has been incredible this season. He's a fantastic defender and has been his entire career here. Doesnt get enough credit for it. Love Jan.

I always wonder if Vertonghen is disliked amongst other professionals and pundits. I know he has a little bit of a nasty streak when needed (not a bad thing and also it's nowhere near bad enough that he's known for it) but so has Dele and he still gets plaudits. The reason I bring this up is because he has been outstanding this year and as has been mentioned in this thread already, he's probably been our best defender overall. Yet he gets no recognition. Listening to various pundits and 'experts' over the last week on tv and radio, not once have I heard his name mentioned when saying how wonderful a team we have. Even last night I think Redknapp mentioned the whole team bar Jan. The only people who were saying he should've been in the team of the year were Spurs fans. All the pundits talk about Toby and barely mention Jan, do they actually watch the games or are they going by what's been said over the last couple of years and assume Toby is doing it all alone.

Vertonghen has been outstanding. He passes the ball under pressure out of defence better than any other CB I watch. He wins almost all his headers. He's strong, flexible, he makes vital blocks and last ditch tackles all the time. And he can run with the ball too. His game went off a bit a couple of seasons ago but he's been excellent bar that period and now he's having his best season with us. Long may that continue.

I think it's all down to that famous "casual" pose in the tunnel pre that Liverpool thrashing. The sort of thing that ex-player pundits will tarnish him with forever - the suspicion that he's a little bit of a flaky foreign fancy Dan.

The problem the pundits must have is selecting which players in our squad to praise. They get 15 minutes to talk and have to cover Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Alderweireld, Rose, Lloris, Walker, Wanyama, Dembele and Vertonghen who are all arguably the best in the league in their positions.

You are perfectly correct though I think they have tarnished JV with the year when he didn't seem to give much of a shit. I really enjoyed the moment last night I think it was a corner and JV was pushing Dier and Toby to exactly where he wanted them to stand. Really impressed with the leadership he has shown.

I also think it might have something to do with the pants-pulling incident. It's probably the moment non-fans will always remember him for.

He has had a brilliant season, but for someone so good in the air, he doesn't get any goals.
Alderweireld gets a vital goal or 2 at set pieces, and so does Dier.
I can't remember the last superman impression we had - a goal Sunday would be nice.

He probably is seen as a bit more flaky than Toby. He's done this a couple of times for instance.

I've just realised - he's just become the first outfield player over the age of 30 to play for us since Adebayor's last appearance two years ago.

Wasnt it Hoddle who honed in on that at the time?

Jan did make the PFA Team of the Year about 3 or 4 seasons ago, so he can't be disliked that much.

Toby was so good last season that he will probably continue to overshadow Jan (at least in the eyes of the average pundit) unless he has a bad spell or Janreally outshines him (not just plays slightly more awesome) for a prolonged period.

Hope he can play at this level for a few more years, he really is outstanding.

Part of the furniture at Spurs these days but when you think he had to come out the other side of the Sherwood era, then have that plank telling all and sundry he couldn't defend.
