Wimmer is a solid young CB and filled in very well last season but I don't understand those who are calling for him to take the first team position. Jan is still better than him has an outstanding relationship and understanding with Toby and is a vice captain for a reason. If healthy he will and should start most games

would be bad for squad morale. you're basically saying to any player that comes into the team that they're only there temporarily regardless of how well they do.

well no I'm saying Jan is still better than Wimmer it seems to me everyone is overreacting to a very small sample size of Wimmers work

If Lloris went out for a month and Vorm played well in his absence you gonna give Vorm the first team spot too?

Poch showed that by putting Verts straight back in vs Man Utd and the rest of season

Wimmer played better than Vertonghen in my opinion.

How so? We had the best defensive record in the league. What did Wimmer do better than Jan in the couple months he played?

In the games Wimmer played:
10 PL games
7 wins
2 draws
1 loss
7 goals against
4 clean sheets

In the games Vertonghen took over after benching Wimmer:
6 PL games
2 wins
2 draws
2 losses
10 goals against
2 clean sheets

So what did Vertonghen do better in your mind?

I was really impressed with Wimmer, but those stats don't tell the whole story. For a start, we did far better before Jan's injury than in the last six games, so those stats are worth considering too, if you want a fair comparison between the two players.

It's rather harsh on Jan to summise that his brief return caused our complete capitulation, which was clearly an issue with the whole team. In his first two games back, we thrashed Man Utd and Stoke, whilst keeping consecutive clean sheets!

Lets say the 10 games before he was injured and Wimmer came in.

10 PL games:
5 wins
3 draws
2 losses
8 goals against
3 clean sheets

Still doesn't look better. The team was somehow better with Wimmer in every single category. We concede less, draw less, lose less, win more and keep more clean sheets with Wimmer in.

Why not compare his whole season? There were 22 PL games before his injury, not 10.

Because then the sample sizes are totally out of whack and Poch didn't even know what his starting 11 was or where to play them.

Comparing 28 games to 10 is weird. Imean I could go by percentages, but then Wimmer will be better anyway again and there will be someone else who says, "but what about THIS*".

That being said I already see where this is going. Every excuse in the book is going to get carted out now.

*-Insert new excuse.
