Gerrard is a British variation on Gerard, which is Germanic.

McManaman is supposed to be an Anglicised version of several Irish names, originating from mag giolla mheidre, which is celtic for something like 'Son of Merryman' (a merryman being a jester/joker).

As with stuff that's centuries old, there's plenty of arguments over whether Mcmanaman is an anglicised irish name, or an irish version of the english 'mcmanaman'. Because of the 'Mc', I'd say it's a celtic name and thus as above, but i'm not an expert!

Awesome, thanks for that!

urgh, they'd love it if we made a hate song for them
Make you right - any attention is deemed a positive by pikeys...they need the press to raise their profile.... Can't believe they made Europa thru 'fair play' ...
Re: wimmer. Can't help but think of ' a wimmer away, a wimmer away, a wimmer away ...' Bit camp tho - ideal for the irons!

Hate to break it to you but Carragher, Gerrard & McManaman are not Irish names

There are lots of Irish people with the surname Carragher, it's as Irish as Gallagher.

Gerrard is a combination of Gerry (Spear in Gaelic) and Hard (valiant & strong). His ancestors were likely to be warriors in Ireland. He is also Roman Catholic which means that it's very likely that he is of Irish descent..

Many if not most people from Liverpool have Irish roots e.g. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Wayne Rooney, Coleen McLaughlin, Steve McMahon etc.

Yeah I believe I saw somewhere that it's estimated that over 60% of the population of Merseyside has Irish heritage of some percentage.

Gerrard is an English name of Norman origin, but McManaman and Carragher are Irish. Liverpool was the main port for Irish immigration into England. Like Glasgow in Scotland ended up with a huge Irish population.

In his final game for Koln, Wimmer won 67% of his aerial duels and made five clearances. The 22-year-old was accurate with 95% of his passes, and saw an effort on goal saved in the first half.

Overall this term, Wimmer has won 29/53 of his tackles and completed 17/21 attempted take-ons, showing he is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Kevin Wimmer has made no defensive errors in the Bundesliga this campaign.

Yeah that was my guess. Seems a very French heritage name.

Carragher is a rough celtic translation of Dear Man (in Celtic, MacFearchair), so it's either Scottish or Irish.
Must be scottish or maybe even a welsh celtic name.. I have never come across or heard of the name Carragher in Ireland
