I know it has been poo pooed, but I cannot seriously believe we aren’t considering Dani Alves on a 1 year deal...guy is the most successful and decorated footballer in history, and is a proven winner. If he isn’t a good guy to have around the team I don’t know who is. Foyth, KWP, Steve Sess can all bed in and learn from one of the greatest fullbacks to play the game...

Yeah I agree - we have had great examples of younger defenders coming on tons due to a really good experienced player like Alves. I'd be all for it, plus he is still amazing.

Lol, everyone has been begging for KWP to get minutes and Aurier to get minutes all season, and to put Trips on the bench. Now we're getting rid and it's "I don't think the other guys are ready". Make up your mind.

You've answered your own question.

They needed minutes LAST season to see where they'd fit in now.

Full back isn't an 'easy' position any more like it was when Carragher started playing 40 years ago. It's now one of the most demanding positions on the pitch.

Bad wording on my part, It’s not an easy position then or now but if you get caught on the ball or make a mistake at RB it’s usually less critical than in the middle of the defence

Fullback seems like one of those positions where unless you have more money than sense it is often hard to justify spending a huge whack. Trippier was no Walker despite what the happy clappers said, but he cost £3.5m. Rose and Davies cost bugger all. Aurier was a reasonable amount but the jury is still out until or if he can stay fit.

Everyone's been jizzing over Pool's fullbacks, one of whom cost only £8m and the other one came out of the academy.

This seems like good business, tbh I'd give Foyth a go as he seems to really have something, and use that money to make sure we get Lo Celso - at the same time reducing our reliance on fullbacks to be creative outlets.

£3m more than Matt Targett. And £30m less than Wan Bissaka. Hard to see it as good business really unless we really are going with Foyth and Trippier will just end up on the bench. Surprising Palace aren't interested.

At this point I can see Eriksen, Toby, Trippier and Rose out for 150/200m with Lo Celso and Sessegnon in to replace. Maybe we will re-sign Llorente. I'm not sure we will do any other business. Ceballos and Saliba situations are unclear and it's also not apparent that we have irons in the fire as alternatives. I think both may be the case of them being talented players so us taking a punt on them.

Overall it would probably leave us in a very similar position to last season, scraping 4th. We wouldn't have made too many immediate improvements but we would at least be well set for the next few years. We'd need a CM and left back on top of that at the very least, with another forward ideally to be competing this season. That's ignoring RB too.

That would be nowhere near good enough.

It's strange that there's such heavy interest in Tripper from big European clubs. He's very much an English style attacking RB, good delivery and passing but not great in tight spaces or particularly patient or varied in his attacking play, he needs a high volume of crossing opportunities to be effective and is a pretty poor defender. Stylewise it's a really weird fit with a team that plays like Atletico.

It’s very worrying that, theirs every possibility that , Toby ,Jan , Tripps and Rose could be gone this window , if you go by ITK . Just saying . Our defence would be considerably weaker IMO .
Left with Foyth , Sanchez , KWP , Davies .

Amazes me people always forget about possibly the most important factor in any transfer fee - age. Trippier is 29 in a few months.

And people seem to forget that TA is actually a midfielder who’s only played fullback since Klopp first tried him there a couple seasons back.

I really don’t see the concern in trusting a centre back who has the technical skills of a attacking midfielder. Especially if he is being coached by the full back whisperer.

Shame nobody wants him domestically - could get £40m for him on home soil I'd imagine.
I still have 8 further pages of the thread to catch up on after reading this post, but on the assumption that no one has already beaten to me to the joke...

"...and we'd be weakening a domestic rival at right-back at the same time."

Boom, nailed it.
