The thing is, in the last accounts we had an outstanding transfer debt of £250 million. That’s got to hurt at some point. Saying that, I agree, we should have enough money for signings. If not, you’ve got to wonder what we’ve been doing with it. (Eg. We paid off approx £20m loan for the training ground, which didn’t have to be paid until 2025, why do that instead of using it for transfers?).
Interest was payable on the training ground debt but is not payable on the inter - club transfer debt.

Not the place for it, but thought I'd add a few thoughts on this point.

It all depends on the terms of the debt as to whether it's equitable to pay it off early, let it live on, or extend (particularly in times of high inflation and high interest rates).

*Transfer debt will be set out in the terms for transfer (i.e. £10m paid in one hit or over 5 years in £2m instalments), and normally factored at net present value and without interest chargeable....if the transfer debt is prior to the current high inflation, then it would seem equitable to let it expire naturally as inflation reduces the debt over the term.
If you consider that £10m - pay the first instalment and put the other £8m in the bank earning 7% interest each year until the final instalment, at which point you have banked ~£800k in interest.
.
....in reality that £8m wouldn't be in the bank, but offset against other more expensive debt.......for example the training ground loan - assuming it's variable interest loan, it would have been cheap when we took it out, but at 6% now would be expensive.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that all debt is not equal - generally cheap and/or stable debt is good (but hard to get), and expensive and/or variable debt is bad (but quick and easy to get)......and most businesses will be trying to factor between the two......or using equity as an alternative to debt (i.e. creating new shares as a way of creating capital).

The part that makes me question him is that the 1v1 duels seem to be a really weak point and positioning aswell. I wouldnt like a fast Eric Dier for 35m

Didn't face much competition in the friendly today. Can't comment directly on this defending aspect. Absolutely valid point

I saw all the games he played in the u21s and then I have to say the defending was horrendous sometimes, lack of concentration but really nice passing ability

This could be relevant (considering both Gosens and VDV do play left back)

Slightly concerning that our primary defender target is “horrendous” at defending

Really? Are you sure he didn't make a huge mistake for the second goal
Don’t know about culpability for the goal, but per the “box score” VdV played the whole 2nd half. Was 0-1 at halftime.

from the lineup, looked like he may have been playing right CB (although they may have just listed lineup in odd order)
