Good first half, awful second.

I've been a big cheerleader of his but he's really struggled these past couple of months. Just not consistent enough in any area of his game after a good initial spell post-injury.

Hopefully Slot or another good manager can come in and gives him the coaching he needs to develop his game and become a top player because his recent form hasn't been good enough, sadly.

I thought he was superb in the first half. Nipping in to nick balls, pushing forwards, covering defence and using the ball well.
Second half, the entire team looked terrible for some reason, so it feels a little harsh to lay any blame on Skipp for that, he's one of our youngest players.

I know that so many on here like to write off players if they aren't setting the world alight by the age of 22 but I really can't understand how some just cannot see his qualities.
Can't believe that after watching how shit nearly everyone apart from Kane have looked this season, people are writing Skipp off and saying that he's championship level.

I'm firmly of the belief that, especially under a progressive manager and with decent team-mates, he will just get better and better.

I know I'll get plenty of disagrees for saying this and I know who they'll be from but I'll stand by my view that he's a bloody good young player.
Just give him time and a team that can actually play football.

Yeah I think context is massive as so many players have looked sub-par this season and I don't think they're suddenly all shit.

I think a fair chunk of our players, especially the young ones, need to be given a clean slate next season and judged on how they look under a coach that gives them a pre-season focused on a more progressive, passing game.

A few weeks of coaching mid-season under a novice like Mason isn't nearly enough after years of negative coaching.

I completely agree because so many of our players have looked a shadow of their former selves this season.
It just pisses me off when so many in here are so eager to jump on players and declare them as shit, when there's a much bigger picture behind this season.

Granted, some in our squad are clearly not good enough and I think we all know who they are but there seems to be a trend of just lumping everyone and anyone into the same bin.

Exactly. Guarantee Villa fans were saying the same about their squad when they were in the relegation zone under Gerrard. 6 months later they're one of the form teams in the league and on the brink of Europe with only one signing in Jan.

A good manager can change so so much about how players are perceived by fans.

Everyone was shocking second half, the last people we should blame are the youth products coming through. A classic case of not knowing what to do with that low block and becoming clueless. Hopefully we can sort that out next year.

if he wasnt a academy lad this thread would be a lot busier, average prem player at best, which is fair enough because we are heading that way as well
I wish people wouldn't keep mentioning him being an academy player. It's not like fans are talking up Winks or Tanganga. I think fans judge him on his potential, the fact he came through the academy just makes it more rewarding if he does well.

Agreed. At times he’s looked brilliant this season. Away to Milan, home against Chelsea etc.

People need to remember that the team is on its arse. Our midfield has been decimated by injuries and him and Højbjerg have been playing every game since January.

Together they aren’t a good pairing, when played with others they both look so much better.

Sorry but Skipp reminds me of a Sunday league player, all hustle and bustle but not actually that good.

No room for sentiment, if he wasn’t homegrown and/or we didn’t have injuries he’d be absolutely nowhere near our team.

Not sure why he’s starting over PEH but tbh they both aren’t good enough, the same way only Romero and Lenglet are good defensive options, only Bentancur and Bissouma are good CM options.

Winks is on loan and Tanganga isn’t getting a game…

Sorry but the fact he’s an academy player is very relevant because we want to see our young academy players grow and develop and be given a chance but tbh I think Winks looked miles better than Skipp ever has, Skipp looks like a Championship level footballer to me.

Apart from the throw in he received that he wasn’t expecting and he then pooped the bed which cost us the third goal I didn’t think he was that bad in the second half.
Seeing Dave trip up over the ball in their half in the second half when no one was within thirty feet of him and Davies’ cross field ball which is still en route to the international space station are more concerning in my book.
Older, more experienced heads need to roll before we make any judgment on Skippy.

tanganga doesnt get anywhere near as much stick as sanchez, despite being as bad

He's played nowhere near as much as Sanchez or slipped up as much when he has though
The point is fans don't give players a pass because they came through the academy

I like Skipp and he’s a better all round player than Winks. However, let’s not kid ourselves that he will be anything more than a squad player. A bit like Manure with Jones, Brown, O’Shea… you need solid squad players to step in when needed.

Sarr has a greater ceiling than Skipp and it’s a shame he wasn’t utilised more instead of running Skipp into the ground.

Made me very sad yesterday in the match thread people laying into him. The whole team were shite second half so lets single out a kid.

You don't make your debut at 17 if you have nothing about you. You don't have Poch, Mourinho and Conte all singing your praises if you are a championship player.

No doubt the same people who told the world confidently that Kane wasn't good enough.

He’s now 22 and no longer a kid. Look at Omomah… Man City reportedly wanted him at one point… he had more promise than Skipp and look at him now, fallen off a cliff.
