He can play in any left-sided position, so he has that going for him. And I'd say he is the #2 left back at the club behind Udogie. I think he's just going to have to really take his chance when it arrives whether that is at left back or further up field. He definitely has talent, but we've not seen it anywhere near enough in a Spurs shirt. But he's also only been at Spurs since the big downturn. It'll be interesting to see if he plays a decent role in the upturn.
I doubt he will play further up since we have plenty of options in that position. It has to be left back or be sold. I would be interested to see how he would do with the inverted role. I'm not sure it will suit him as much as it does Udogie and Davies though.

Teason is playing a high line. Davies can get upfield and inside like Udogie, but he can't recover position like Udogie can. Sess hasn't shown much in a Spurs shirt, but he can cover ground better than Favies. If Sees can get some confidence within Ange's framework, then we know from his Fulham days and snippets with us that he's got goals and assists in him.
I dunno, a lot of hypothetical there. Ange has publicly praised Davies as a left back whereas Sess has spent all of Ange’s tenure thus far in the treatment room. The role of the fullback is more about stepping inside than recovering position as well, that’s more on the centre backs. Don’t think we’ve seen anything in his career that suggests he can do that. He’s firmly third choice until at the very least he can prove his fitness.

Completely agree. Plus 1 is very young and one is old at the end of his career. If sess got passed his injury issues it would be much better to keep him as a hg option than Davies. But it’s a big if.

The reality is we should sign another player to compete with Destiny. Davies at his maximum is steady whilst still having limitations that cost him and us, but he’s always available. Sessegnon is rarely available, and when he is he plays within himself. Optimum move would be to sell both and bring another player in.

True however I guess we need to see how Sess recovers from his surgery. It is possible that the surgery could fix or at least improve the situation that has caused all those injuries. If he can get fit (huge If I know) then he would be a ready made left back back-up plus he is home grown as well which helps.

If Sees stops playing within himself we may not need to find someone else. Ange's tenure is only around 100 days old and 5 or 6 games in. Sess has tons to do, but the club has been at for 4 years has been a joke. I hope he gets a chance to show much better, even as a back up.

In the Championship it was his reading of space that allowed him to get the number of goals he did. He's never been a flyer nor has he got any tricks in his locker, he just had a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

In this system, he would likely find a natural home IF he can stay fit. He developed the defensive side of his game well in Germany and he's a pretty well rounded player, but it's these constant injuries that make me think he'll be replaced in the next couple of years.

I hope so to I’m just a bit more pessimistic about his chances

How confident can we ever be that another injury isn't around the corner? His time with us doesn't give us much reason for hope in that sense.
I've always been a skeptic when it comes to how much talent he actually has, and I'm not sure why people think he could be a good enough Premier League left back. It's based on absolutely nothing.

Yes was thinking the same. Given he’s not great at take ons & crossing but good at runs into the box and scoring, the underlapping fullback role seems perfect for him.

I really don't think Sess has what it takes to be an inverted LB because his positioning has always been a weak area. Having said that his attacking movement is generally quite good, as you say, and looking at the squad make up, Perisic probably leaving either in Jan or next summer, there is a gap that opens up at LW.

If you're picking one from Gil or Sess who do you go with?

Agree with his skillset/potential match for the inverted FB. My only strong opinion on Sess is that I'm open to him sticking around long-term, but only if he shows a) a sudden uptick in form b) appears to get over his injuries, and c) shows potential as a backup to Udogie as an inverted FB.

We need room in the squad for an elite winger or two to take Ange's system to the next level. I'm talking about a big money (Mitoma or Eze) signing to replace Kane's output. With Solomon/Johnson/Kulu, you would hope one of them would take the leap, but it's asking a lot to expect 2-3 of them to do so, so you sign another winger and use the others as depth. Gil could factor in, but he'd need to make an even bigger jump. Doesn't look like there's room for Sess from a squad building standpoint.

As an inverted FB, he'd have to beat Davies in the short term, convince in the longer term in the inverted role, both of which require him to stay fit. The time horizon to realistically do so is end of this season at the latest, and maybe until the Jan window - depends on when we plan on bringing in Davies' successor.

So he's got a shot, but it's a looooong one.

I think the difference in the past and now is that we were hoping Sess could be first choice.

Now Udogie is here he only needs to have more in his locker than Davies.
He's quicker, more mobile, and is probably more suited to playing in tighter spaces than Ben so has a chance.
If he can stay injury free and Ange can get inside his head to get his confidence back then there's still hope for him.

There's a player there. Would like to see if Ange can coax that timid nature out of him and give him freedom to just play without the concern of making a mistake.

you know the comp is weak when they include pre-season highlights, wow 4 years and this is all he has to show for it, that's even worse then I imagined

Remember the goal v Bayern?

Let’s give him a chance.

We need to remember that these players played under two dinosaurs in Jose and Conte, nobody apart from HK thrived consistently in the last 4 years.

Look at the Bissouma turnaround.
Duno if this is sarcastic, but we cant seriously solely cling to a consolation goal against Bayern 4 years ago

The youtube title and shirts we are wearing didn't give you a hint that the clips are all from last season?

The clip is also from October, so the season was only 2,5 months old when the video was created.

Yes, he hasn't developed the way we hoped, and the injuries haven't helped, but with Udogie and Davies ahead of him we don't have to rely on him this season.

There is some upside potential that his latest surgery will fix a permanent issue, and maybe Ange can work his magic on him. If not, he'll be off in the coming two windows.

To this day I cant understand why he was converted from a free scoring winger into a defender. It really has ruined him.

I'd like to see if he's still got it.
IMO Sess has been ruined by injuries and previous managers. He is not a LB or LWB. Needs to play like at Fulham further forward on the left sniffing out goals. I just don’t see how he gets in the team now with no Europe this season.

You can say weak mentality etc but I think we even signed him when he was injured.

I still think this lad could be a decent player for us if he could ever stay fit for a sustained period.

his big issue is that he is made of glass and plays like it. If he has more confidence in his body I think he would have more confidence in his game
