Noticed more than one occasion last night where Maddison was getting really frustrated with Timo losing the ball or making a poor pass.

In the end he stopped passing to him.

I think he’s one of the most overrated players we have ever had, He’s decent but I think in a few years time we will consider him average. There’s nothing wrong with that but he is what he is. A decent player.
How could he be classed as overrated when 90% of SC thought this is what we'd get, a mixed bag?

Overrated? Tons of people don't seem to rate him at all and I haven't seen anybody saying anything more than he is a good player. I don't know what it is about Werner but he appears to attract some very odd opinions in here.

He's another Jekyl and Hyde player which we probably have enough of at the moment. Moments of brilliance especially off the ball and then moments of stupidity especially off the ball. You would hope that Ange's culture brings out consistency for that as well as shooting and if it does, he's a starter. If not, a solid squad player.

He was poor last night. Mostly his movement in fighting to win crosses coming into the box. Johnson was an excellent example of anticipating and fighting to win a cross when it came in. Whereas Timo had two or three crosses he could have attacked but did nothing. Hopefully he learns from it.

Goal contributions since his debut on Jan 14:
Son 6
Johnson 6
Werner 5
Richarlison 4
Maddison 3
Sarr 2
Udogie 2
Kulusevski 2
Porro 1
Bentancur 1
Romero 1

Could he have an assist or goal more at this point, probably. But he's been here three months and is almost on par with Son who many view as world class and Johnson who has started to shake off being written off by many in the beginning of the season. Give him some time to fully settle in as our manager has said repeatedly.

He'd have to sign for a lot less wages IMO. What have we heard - 160-170k he's on now? Would he take half to 2/3rds that?

Where is that market equilibrium point where we find the right value for him? If we could achieve that he would be a fine signing.

But if we have irons in the fire for a special LW/ST signing, then save the transfer fee, the wages, and the non-HG spot.

I'm not touchy at all but I have to say again I'm afraid I don't understand at all how you are coming to your conclusion. You even say in this comment that Ange has said about strikers not reading the situation and not expecting the ball coming across. Yet you link this to a perceived criticism of Werner who is the player usually cutting the ball back to those strikers. It just doesn't make much sense what you are saying.
We'll have to wait and see I guess but I've not seen anything that says that the club want to make it permanent which makes me think as I do you are free to disagree.
My seeing a perceived criticism is maybe because it fits with a few people's view of his performance last night, and not one that people had talked about before.

Out of interest why do you say he so ‘overrated’ I dont think anyone on here is particularly waxing lyrical about him, most seem to agree that he is fast, is a half decent threat and a nice bloke who works hard but that he is also wasteful and not particularly clinical in front of goal.

Don’t think anyone is particularly overrating him tbh and if it wasn’t for the reasonable £15mil buy option then a lot of us would be saying no thanks.

How could he be classed as overrated when 90% of SC thought this is what we'd get, a mixed bag?

Yeah that’s fair, I probably went a bit over the top, out of frustration!

Strangely Werner contributed more to the result than Madds who gave the ball away quite a lot too. Werner wasn’t great but he injected a moment of quality that frankly others didn’t find across 90 minutes.

I think Brennan Johnson did with his run to meet that moment of quality and score the goal.

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

I like him, and considering how long he has been here, he has contributed, but then he goes and does something really basic and you kinda forget the good stuff he does. I think for the money, he contributes much more then someone like Gil so signing him and selling Gil makes sense. Him vs Solomon i am not so sure, but (touch wood) Werner seems much more solid as a footballer in terms of overall fitness and durability.

I would sign him, but we do need some additional quality too.

I like Timo and think he would be good value for the money in the summer, but he definitely was not ‘fine’ yesterday. After the assist he was awful and his failure to do one of the most basic jobs of a winger in Ange’s system probably cost us the game.

3 times he could have had a tap in if he just attacks the far post when crosses come in. First half even savage noticed he stood behind the defender when Johnson put a brilliant ball across, get goal side and it’s a tap in. Later in the half, Johnson puts another one across and same story, he’s on his heels. Then in the second half Sarr puts a great ball in and he needs to do exactly what Johnson did for the goal - get in front of his man and it’s a tap in again. Ironically the only time he attacked a cross he was offside and made a cracking defensive header when Sarr had a really good chance.

The good news is this is surely coachable and when Ange made his ‘joystick’ remarks I’m pretty sure Timo is top of the list for that video review of where his movement let us down
Great post, spot on in my opinion.

As a change option he is OK but he isn't good enough to be a regular starter for next season if we want an improved team. That also applies to several others currently members of the first team squad.

But, at least Maddison was trying to be positive, my main gripe with Werner was why didn’t he try to take on the full back again, he was in the same position a few times but either gave it away or passed backwards?
As well as hiding for crosses from the other side he was so negative when receiving the ball, it may be a confidence thing but just seemed more concerned with not losing it than trying something positive.
