I think the upcoming young talent would have to be something special though. Because if he’s not ready we’re going to have most of the same issues we have now in that area of the pitch, unless maybe Johnson goes up a level.

I think fans have been willing to overlook some of the team’s shortcomings this season, but will be a lot less forgiving next season.
My assumption would be if we bring in a young attacker they will have very high potential.

Maybe scapegoat was the wrong word.

I think some are looking at his finishing/lack of goals and immediately thinking he isn't good enough, when in reality across every game since he has been here I have seen him attempt more crosses and shots than anyone else. The stats will probably say otherwise so I could be wrong, but it feels that way to me when watching.

I feel like you summed it up right there.

He's average PL quality.

But Ange says he wants to challenge for the title.

Average PL quality does not challenge for PL titles.
Fergie had a number of average squad players padding out a a quality 13-14 players.

rumours circulating that we want to loan him again. Could be the best option for everyone, means we have a useful squad player (especially if we are in Europe) but dont have to dip into the transfer funds to sign him

Agree but is that enough? You'd have to be getting an absolute shit load of goals from your other 2 forwards to be able to carry one who basically cannot score.

True and pool were able to challenge city past 3/4 years with having average players pad out their squad but don't we own enough average players without bringing in another one?
He is good value at 15m but that money and his wages could be the difference between a top striker / LW and a level below that.
The focus needs to be on getting the quality 14/15 players first

It's a squad game - he might not be of the quality we hope for in a first team regular (open to debate) - but as a squad player he is top notch.

There is no value in a player who regularly misses sitters. Expensive on a free.
That is only part of the story though isn't it - he has been one of our most creative players since he joined in terms of creating chances. Clearly he could score more than he does but he has offered a lot to the team in his performances so far. To say he isn't even worth a free transfer is pure hyperbolic nonsense.

Well yeah if we were going to sign 2 top class wingers and a top centre forward, AND Werner. And he only plays if 3 or 4 are injured or in Euro Vase group games - then fine. But it wouldn't be that. It would be Werner + one more and he'd be a key player.

Ha. What in gods name makes you think we're in a position to sign two top class wingers and a top centre forward with or without Werner's money?

Over the past few seasons we've spent 150-200m on the front line we have - DL isn't going to just go out and spend at least that again.

Well we obviously need a top centre forward and a top winger who is a 1v1 expert. And I guess one winger / number 10 hybrid as we're obviously targeting that profile. That's not really a debate is it?

Depends on what you mean by 'top' - if you mean potentially world class then a 'top' centre forward alone would likely cost £100m and a 'top' winger at least 60-80m and a winger/10 hybrid at least 60-80m.

Clearly we are not in that market, at least not for 3 players of that ilk in one window.

Even if we were, then signing Werner at 15m surely makes even more sense as it frees up more money to focus on those big signings - in fact if we can get a fee for Solomon and Gil we would likely effectively get Werner for free.

I wouldn’t have a problem with him if he continue to put up the numbers he’s putting up now.

He’s had a bad game but so did everyone else, saying that he wouldn’t get into city’s bench is true but so is all our other forwards aside for Son. Unless we are trying to copy exactly how city plays then that doesn’t really mean anything.

He’s in the team to do a job and he’s obviously doing it most of the time as shown by the numbers he’s putting up and the fact that Ange is starting him more often than not. So to me unless we are looking to invest heavily in the summer on a readymade LW forward that is great at 1v1 and also has end products otherwise it would be really stupid not to keep him.

I like Timo’s effort but I just feel his shortcomings and averageness rub off on the team.

You’re only as strong as your weakest link and when he’s constantly missing chances, losing the ball and smacking crosses out for goal kicks you can almost see the rest of the team’s heads drop.
I think that’s quite a poor take.
The underperforming players do the same whether Werner is playing or not.

I said this the other day, if he happy here and leibzig are happy to see his big wages off the book again then I think its a good option for us.

If a loan was available I think that’d be the best option.

He seems like a good professional who wants to play.
