Is it wrong that the main reason I would be happy about signing Alderweireld is to put some Southampton fans back in their place?

There's various sources that's have said the £18m fee has been made up by the press and it's actually a lot lower.

We still desperately need more protection in the 2 in front of them

Agree.

We can sign as many defenders as we want, but if we don't give them any protection then it's a bit of a waste of time.

That said, I think this would be a great signing provided that it doesn't prevent us looking to improve in other areas.

Having Alderweireld gives us a defensive squad of:

RB: Walker, Trippier
LB: Rose, Davies
CB: Aldi, Vertonghen, Wimmer, Dier, Fazio

That for me is a very healthy selection of defenders with a wide range of varying talents that mean we can set up differently depending on the opposition.

But yeah...let's give them some midfield protection please!

Last offensive minded player we signed was Eriksen. Don't know if we need him when we keep Fazio. Honestly don't want someone in Dier's way and think Milos V could do the job as fifth CB. And CCV is one or two years away probably. Let's see

Meh. Matt Law's got a very inaccurate history with us.

It's mostly guesswork from him. I'm inclined to trust Jason Burt more from The Telegraph who does have better info I think.

The Telegraph has become as unreliable as the Mirror. Matt Law never gets anything right for Spurs.

I like the look of that, however what is to become of Yedlin?

My suspicion with Yedlin was that he was a purchase more for commercial than footballing reasons, but to be fair that is largely unfounded as I haven't really seen him play very often.

I think he's probably our 4th choice right back at the moment though.

Not sure if anybody has suggested this/thought this. However is it a possibility that Toby could be the back up to MS?
He played in CM a few times for Saints last season? Or is that a bit far fetched?

midfield protection doesn't mean you can have average defenders. They can't stop good marking and defending from corners and free kicks ect. Yes it helps if we have more of the ball so our defence isn't indee pressure, but adding trippier and a young wimmer hasn't drasticaly changes our defence. We need a starter CB to come on now, as well as a top defensive dm

Completely agree.

I think my point is more that our selection of defensive midfielders is much weaker (we basically don't have any) than our selection of centre backs.

If we were in a position where we could only spend money on a centre back or a defensive midfielder, I'd go for the latter every time.

Wasn't there talk of trying to turn him into a winger of some sorts?

Really not sure what to make of this.

Seems a nonsense to me to have 5 CB's (assuming Poch plays him and Vertonghen at CB) when the squad needs another striker (as Kane cannot play 60 games and we currently have no other goalscoring strikers), an experienced CM and ideally (although I doubt it) a speedy AM.

So my logic is that if this report is correct, then either Fazio is to be sold (in addition to Kaboul and Chirches) or one of the CB's is to be the DM we need.

EDIT
Twitter account is probably Fake despite the pics and logos of Sky being used i

Eh. Seems a pointless and superfluous buy.
