Be fair to JJ, he said it was difficult, so looks like he knew about the contract stuff, plus he admitted that plans change. ITK is not an exact science but he's shown his worth ten times over on here.

What makes me laugh about "some" of the Saints fans is how they believe they messed up or he would be their player. Anyone can see if you offer a player a choice of two clubs he is going to join the one that he would consider to be better.

The second we showed a real interest in the player he was ours. Is that arrogance? nope, just reality.

Did Saints really want to keep him ? he's injury prone and misses as many games as he plays.

After a one year trial I think Saints had made their minds up that they did not want him

Ask any honest Saints fan and they will tell you that we have just signed an absolute belter of a player! I really can't understand those who couldn't get excited about the signing at all, he will be epic at the lane. The icing on the cake is that Southampton won't be getting a penny out of it Happy days indeed.

This has jus been posted on Saints web and the highlighted part is probably why JJ was saying no to the signing a week or so ago:

Thanks for the welcome, been lurking a long time and thought i'd finally register. Also just to be clear I most certainly am not affiliated with the club in any way - just a regular old fan.

To answer your points though - i'm not necessarily suggesting AM couldn't pay the 1.5m but if they could then why wait until after the deadline had passed? Thought I heard somewhere they were planning on using some of the Spurs money to pay us off or maybe they were waiting on the Turan deal with Barca? I just don't see why if they had the money they didn't just pay us straight away.

Secondly I wasn't suggesting AM were rejecting a 15m bid out of hand more that the Spurs deal was already agreed and basically done so it didn't matter how much we offered at that point.

The legal stuff is probably the crux of what's stopped us getting him. We were probably under the belief that we still had a legal right to buy him for 6.8m until we had been paid the release clause when what we should have done is put in an increased offer as soon as we were aware AM wanted to take him back. I can't help thinking the CFO leaving had to do with him giving assurances that the legalities were air tight not understanding that this wouldn't stop the player going elsewhere as has happened. Certainly it seems to me that the relationship between us and Madrid had soured quite early on as the level of comms between the two clubs seems minimal even before any threats of legal action.

A Belgian international regular and also highly rated by the team that finished just 4 points adrift of us but with significantly less goals conceded, yet he's not an improvement on what we have - how does that work ?

Imho saints had a better screen for their back 4. MS was excellent for them and Wanyama did well. Our back 4 seem to get exposed rather more easily.

It's funny how the main insult thrown our way by Southampton fans is that their academy is better than ours and we only ever buy players. Last time we played them, we had more academy products in our team than they did.
