Great signing.

Just need to flog Chiriches and Kaboul then the defence is sorted. Wouldn't turn down £5m+ for Fazio either.

Some of the Saints Web lot saying they hope he does his hamstring on the first day of the season. Stay classy.

And apparently our setup (one of the most highly regarded training centres in the country - if not Europe) isn't as good at theirs.

I think Levy deserves massive credit for this.

He managed to sign a player who was all set to join Southampton, and most likely was aware of the first refusal deadline when their own legal department wasn't.

Yes well done, but we should have got him last year, We scouted him same time we bought Jan.

It's true though Fonte was the better defender last year...but once again a player signs for Spurs and therefore makes his bloody brilliant. I don't think he is that good of signing and is not an improvement on what we currently have. In my opinion we needed at least three players who are going to make the first team better...after signing number 3 I think it has last summer written all over it.

And before someone responds with who else then...not my job!
A Belgian international regular and also highly rated by the team that finished just 4 points adrift of us but with significantly less goals conceded, yet he's not an improvement on what we have - how does that work ?

From "Jack" on Saintsweb...

F*ck off Toby
F*ck off A.Madrid
And mainly, f*ck off Tottenham. Can't they ever come up with anything on their own? Masters of copying what they see elsewhere, and not quite making it work. Hope his hamstring goes on the first day of the season.

They seem particularly angry with us. Again.

Can we have some saints meltdown whoring please? Will help me get through a very dull day at work!

I am ashamed to say that I am taking some enjoyment from seeing it.

There's so much "the only reason he's going there is £££, they're welcome to him if that's the case....was carried by [ ] anyway"

It's classic first stages of denial. Let's be objective for a moment, outside the money factor:
- we have consistently finished above them for f*ck knows how long
- we have better players
- our coaches are probably equivalent, though I'd say Koeman did a better job than Poch last year
- we have a better stadium and will be (we hope) moving to an even better one in due course
- he has a bunch of Belgian team mates here
- we are more established, and arguably have more potential
- we are based on London, and the merits that come with that

But yeah, it's all about money

Really chuffed with this signing, really good buy

They were quick on the draw.

Here's one that defines the fickle nature of footie fans:

I think the worst thing of all of this really is the fact it is Spurs. He's a top, top class defender; at least he was with us last year, and could have done much better than Spurs. I really don't understand their appeal other than £££. Their set-up is pretty poor in comparison to Saints and the whole club just feels a bit superficial and "tin-pot". This is obviously reactionary, but a player of his quality last season should be playing CL, not Europa. It's a massive loss. I don't blame the board at all, unlike some knee-jerk reactions; I think if you read between the lines of what RK said in his press conferences it is obvious that AM simply did not want to deal with Saints (presumably because of the contract and low fee - cheaper to take legal action and pay compensation). I'm certain Toby wanted to stay at Saints at the end of the season but AM just wanted to flog him to the highest bidder (minus Saints). If people have to blame someone - blame AM. You really think the board were sitting on their thumbs waiting for Atletico to accept the 6.8m or however much the original loan contract specified? It seems to me that they pulled all the stops to get TA and AM were the ones to halt it. So be it. That's football politics. As a club, we will move forward and pursue other targets which we undoubtedly already are in talks with / are monitoring / going to talk to. The lack of faith on here is unbelievable with some.

Haha seriously? This guy is a complete moron. We have had some very highly respected figures in world football talk about how impressive our set up is. Our training facility is up there with the best in the world, our academy is producing high quality players who are learning the way that we play, we are in an excellent financial position and we will have a new stadium in not too long. What about that is tin pot? Just screams of pure sour grapes to be honest, Southampton will always be just a "nice" club on the south coast. They don't have any real pull for a top class player and have no real history to back up any talk of them being a massive club.
