I'm always pleasantly surprised when actual stats go in Toby's favor to emphasize his genius. He's the typical man of defender you need to watch to fully grasp how talented he is.

He is calm composed and rarely ever finds himself in inescapable situations because of his intelligence and situational awareness.

I think Vertonghen has stepped up a level this year and I've always loved him, for the most part, but he has finally been let free by Toby's presence and able teams do what he he does best, carry the ball straight into the opposing teams midfiled, and then to mousa, eriksen, alli, Kane...goal.

He reminds me of King. I remember during one of my rare visits to the Lane I spent most of the game watching King, and he was meticulous. A player who knew exactly what he needed to be doing at every moment. Alderweireld is very similar.

Amazingly I wasn't too impressed when we signed him, due to reports of him being a little sloppy back in his Ajax days. How wrong I was!

Could be rehashing an old story, but the below is in the Times today:

Toby Alderweireld has insisted on the inclusion of a release clause if he is to sign a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgium defender, 28, has twice rejected a new contract and his representative has had no recent talks with the club, amid interest in him from Manchester City, who are also keen on Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, his Spurs team-mates.

Tottenham have the option to extend Alderweireld’s deal by a further season beyond 2019, but should they do so, he has the right to insert a €30 million (£25.3 million) release clause that can be activated from that year. Tottenham have so far rejected his demands for such a clause, resulting in a contract dispute with one of their most important players over the past two seasons.

Alderweireld earns about £53,000 a week and knows that he could at least double that wage by leaving.

Despite the impasse, Mauricio Pochettino has maintained that he is not worried about interest in his centre back from the likes of City and Inter Milan. However, the Tottenham manager faces a fight to keep Walker, who has questioned his future and is leaning towards leaving the club...

We have reached the stage where we will have to pay six figure weekly salaries to 5 or 6 players.

If that's still not enough to keep Toby without a release clause then we have problems as imo we should not go down that road. I don't see why he'd insist on that anyway if we make him one of our top earners.

If he gets a release clause and a hefty pay rise, if a club did come in for him it doesn't mean he would automatically decide to go.....
