We have reached the stage where we will have to pay six figure weekly salaries to 5 or 6 players.

If that's still not enough to keep Toby without a release clause then we have problems as imo we should not go down that road. I don't see why he'd insist on that anyway if we make him one of our top earners.

Because he knows Daniel Levy

Because he knows Daniel Levy

Doesn't trust Levy's "gentlemens agreements" then? :D.

If we give him parity with our top earners and he still insists on a release clause then he can only be motivated by money. He's already tasted success abroad so it's not like he will worry that his career will pass him by without winning anything significant.

Hopefully the release clause is just a bargaining tool to ensure we pay him enough.

Disagree. In 2 years time if we haven't won the league or even if we have, he may want to win the league/Champions league with another club. By signing a new 5 year deal without a release clause he knows Levy would make it very difficult to let him go.

Plus we don't want release clauses to be the norm so Levy needs to stand firm on this

Could be rehashing an old story, but the below is in the Times today:

Toby Alderweireld has insisted on the inclusion of a release clause if he is to sign a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgium defender, 28, has twice rejected a new contract and his representative has had no recent talks with the club, amid interest in him from Manchester City, who are also keen on Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, his Spurs team-mates.

Tottenham have the option to extend Alderweireld’s deal by a further season beyond 2019, but should they do so, he has the right to insert a €30 million (£25.3 million) release clause that can be activated from that year. Tottenham have so far rejected his demands for such a clause, resulting in a contract dispute with one of their most important players over the past two seasons.

Alderweireld earns about £53,000 a week and knows that he could at least double that wage by leaving.

Despite the impasse, Mauricio Pochettino has maintained that he is not worried about interest in his centre back from the likes of City and Inter Milan. However, the Tottenham manager faces a fight to keep Walker, who has questioned his future and is leaning towards leaving the club...

Set the release clause at 70m. That way it will take a world record transfer for a defender to get him. Job done!
Oh and pay him what he bloody deserves!

That's most of the squad sold off then. The wrags have done their job - just waiting for another blockbuster from one of the red tops prior to Fridays game.

i dont think its that at all, this was from a respected journo in the times
the issue is that the team are playing brilliantly and are 2nd in the league, its quite understandable that they want to be paid in line with other players who arent as good and happen to be way below us in the table
When someone like Lindgard is on a reported £100k per week why wouldnt a player like Toby think i add a lot more to us than him and im on half his wages

Seems convenient if you ask me.

£25m is the price that would have clubs lining up around the block to pay it. You can almost guarantee that he'd be off in the summer with wages of at least 100k a week(which is Lovren's new deal at Pool), so I figure his agent is looking for something near that. Sounds like he's being offered the 80k Sissoko is on, and not unreasonably thinks he's worth rather more than that.

Wouldn't bother me if we accepted the release clause. €30m Euro for a player who by then will be 30yo ? Who we paid 12m for ?

Seems reasonable to me.

But would they be lying up to pay it in 2020 ? By then we may well be able to offer him more and he may be even more settled ?

But I think it's the precedent of inserting a release clause which is the danger. Do it for one, then all the agents will be on the phone. He'll be a 30 year centre back, yes, but he'll likely still be the best centre back in the league. Toby looks like he'll be at the top until he's 33/34 easily.

This is the problem for me. A bad road to go down imo, particularly with the crazy money floating around the PL these days.
