If he isn’t back in the team for the FA Cup or our next Prem game I’ll be concerned. Atm I think people might be making a mountain out of a mole hill.

This smells a little to me, that's not usually how a negotiation works, usually there is a high and a low and a middle ground found, Levy would not offer full amount, nor is Toby worth twice our best paid player otherwise our pay structure is completely out the window, we will at some point have to change our pay structure but Kane is the person to do that for, not Toby.
Actually, whether or not it is true, it does sound plausible as written. It implies that we went through our normal negotiation process (which may or may not involve Poch) and were getting nowhere. We are blaming Toby's team for that, but eventually decided to try to bottom it out with an all-inclusive approach. They set their asking price, Levy took a deep breath, asked Poch what he thought, got the answer, spent a few hours talikng to the Samaritans, then manned-up and gave Poch the go ahead. They then moved the goalposts and our side had a sense of humour failure.

If it's true, then I say fuck him. As good as he is, and as good as Walker was, it's better to take the money, keep a happy squad, and make the best of it.

Was it reported what the greatest defender of all time gets paid once he signed for liverpooL?

I know he's a legend already, a symbol and the perfect footballer but Toby should be at least on par with that

Sorry if I've missed it but where exactly has this info come from?
This could be from Dave the barman at the Rose and Crown as far as we know.

Just can't believe Levy was prepared to throw wage structure out the window

Poch confirms Alderweireld isn't here: "After 3 & a half months he suffered a massive injury. From day 1 we created a plan to help him. We worked with the medical area & sports science. He’s 28, it was a massive injury & we cannot put at risk his career."

More from Poch on Alderweireld: "We need to apply common sense about how he's used in the first few weeks after training. Competing is different. We were lucky to have Newport. All going well he'll be available for Rochdale & we will assess day by day."

More on Alderweireld. Poch and the player had a conversation after the Liverpool game. "They always feel fit to play but it’s up to us and the medical stuff to make the decision. With this type of injury you have to be careful."

“As for Toby, the story is that his team had been quite hard to work with and eventually everyone including Poch sat down together and asked him what he wanted. He wanted a huge amount, double the highest paid player at the club. Everyone went away and Levy asked Poch what he thought and Poch said we should pay it. Poch used that to his advantage and told Toby that he is going to get him what he wanted. They shook hands and everyone felt very good. So they drew up the contract and gave it to Toby as soon as he got himself fit (last week). His agent turned round and said thank you, but we've changed our mind and we now want this much instead. Poch flipped as you saw. It's not dead but not in a good place right now.”

This just seems like an unbelievable negotiation tactic. Toby is great, but we're not crocked without him. We've got 3 competent CBs in Vertonghen, Sanchez, and Dier. We're also obviously willing to play Foyth in the cups. Also, everyone knows where Poch stands on these things. Toby would be playing with fire to risk not playing for 4 months in a world cup year.

Our own @Hercules provided information during the transfer window saying that the wage structure as it currently exists is about to go out of the window. I'd expect new contracts for Kane, Eriksen and Alderweireld to be at the sharp end of that.

Hilarious if people think this is true.

to go from paying 50k? to 200k? to a player who isn't our best would be hard to believe, to believe Levy would do it is next to impossible, it's like for years stating you are afraid to stand in a water stream but then one day suddenly jumping in the sea, sorry if that doesn't make sense, it was the 1st random example that came into my head :) I would expect when Levy breaks wage structure it would be very calculated with our best player being the ceiling, to pay Toby 200k you have to then increase Kane to at least 300k etc not going to happen...

If I was Poch I would play up the fitness issue too. If Toby and his advisors and other clubs think he is a risk to a recurrence of a bad injury then even if that is overstated it might put doubts in a few potential suitors minds / manage expectations
