The numbers being thrown around are ridiculous IMHO. Arsenal and Liverpool are not even close to be offering 200k per week to so many of their first XI players I think. We have Levy at helm remember!? Bonuses and add-ons are the ones that will on the table.

But what is worrying is Toby's camp seemingly tough agreement to negotiation. I don't think Poch like such matters lingering, and it really can break the dressing room. We had it with Walker last season. That probably explains why he was being left at home and not travelled with the lads.

I just hope Toby can be more professional and perform what a sportsman should be until the end of the season. If his agent and team keep stirring shit meanwhile, I hope they could be told to fuck off.

I’m sure the next round of contract talks have been carefully planned.

We need our new stadium to pay bigger wages.

We move in to our new stadium in the summer. I expect wage increases to happen pretty soon

Toby alderweireld prior to his injury was the best centre back in the league and one of the very best in the world

Him Kane and possibly Vertonghen are the only 3 players that would start in any team in the world

As this is his last contract and the fact he has been underpaid in comparison to his peers at other clubs he should get 200k a week along with Kane

VVD is on reported 180k so Alderweirled will demand that knowing he currently has the power in negotiations

Extending his contract will be the toughest one Levy will ever have done

Toby was the best CB in the league in 15-16. The last two years, Vertonghen has been the better player.

He's never going to get £200k a week, anywhere. CBs don't get those kinds of wages, anywhere.

I’d add Eriksen to that list.

Keeping your best players is now just as difficult a job for virtually all clubs as buying in new ones.

Doesn't really matter does it? Sets the standard

Well yeah it does, Alderweired knows that he isn't going to get anywhere near that at Spurs, there's other CB's in the world better than VVD who don't get anywhere near what VVD gets.]

If Liverpool want to overpay that's their business, not ours

True. But when players see other players getting overpaid elsewhere, they might think they’d like to go somewhere where they can get overpaid too.

Not that I think this applies in Toby’s case. I think it’s all a lot of unnecessary and unwarranted panic based on a thorough lack of knowledge of the truth of the situation. And what makes it worse is that we’re playing the game the media want us to.

Sure, doesn't quite work like that though, pretty sure him and his agent realise that Spurs don't pay amongst the best wages in the league, like Eriksen isn't suddenly going to bang on the chairman's door and ask for £300k a week just because Sanchez is getting paid a big wedge at Man Utd, I'd be surprised if our players do actually think like that, I mean if they do then they generally haven't got a clue about Spurs' wage structure are playing for the wrong team, I suspect it would have been a giveaway when they signed their first contract with this club.

It works like that for some players. You can join Spurs understanding their wage structure and still choose to cash in elsewhere at some point.

But my point is that I don’t think generalising like this gets us any nearer to being able to predict what will happen in Toby’s case. I think much of the speculation is a bit daft, to be honest.
