Sanchez, whilst being a massive success this season, has had a few shaky moments in the last 2 or 3 games. If not for the contract situation I think Toby would normally be back in the team as the senior CB. However, Sanchez is the future and if Toby isn't signing and wants out then Sanchez is the main man.

Doubt it. Roberto Martinez is a defensive muppet and I stand by my belief that Belgium will be knocked out by some obscure country in the early knockout rounds because of it.

Even if it did, if his stance is pay me what I'm worth or else and our stance is accept this offer or else then I don't see how this changes anything.

Has he changed his tactics? He was known for being to offensive and tactically naive at Wigan and Everton for example, is he now too defensive?

You statement is true but misleading. The difference is 1 game
The only season Toby has played less than Dembele is this one and that's because of a mix of an injury and contract problems

14/15 MD (26) TA (26)
15/16 MD (29) TA (38)
16/17 MD (30) TA (30)
17/18 MD (20) TA (10)
He's only missed games through injury.

Roberto Martinez's comments are perfect. We have the power in the situation back again, maybe this was the plan all along.

You want your big pay check Toby? Cool, but we're not gonna work the rest of our season around you playing in the World Cup.

I hope Belgium win it without him and he realises when he's old he won't be able to sit there and cherish that extra 50,000 a week he got, whilst vertonghen is sitting there with a World Cup winners medal.

That would be glorious.

Who knows who's trying to spin what but it does seem more and more the case that Toby is asking for an unreasonable pay packet.

I can't imagine with the new stadium that the club would be tight arses with contract offers. Levy does like players tied down to long term deals to retain value.

I think it's just got to be made clear to him that accept our offer or you will be sold. You either want to stay or you don't.

i think without the contract situation we would play 3 at the back again

Does it really matter, at the end of the day it’s about games missed, but I take your point. Tweeting again today back at Hotspur way. Definitely seems to tweeting a lot lately, something weird is going on. As said feel there’s a lot more to this than we know about. He seems quite positive and enthusiastic, maybe the club really don’t value him anywhere near what he values himself.
I went to an evening with Ossie Ardiles the other night, Micky Hazard hosting. They said that the club value him very highly still and want him to stay for sure. Interestingly, they also said that when you take into account the add on bonuses, such as wins, clean sheets, goals scored (and maybe other factors), we are the 3rd highest payers in the league. We also pay the most in bonuses. So our players are well paid, contrary to popular opinion. On a previous similar night with other ex Spurs players, it was said that Harry gets £10k a goal and £10k a win for instance. That can make a big difference.

While I don't doubt these guys get good info, and it ties into what Levy said recently, it doesn't really tie in to the wage bills that come out in reports from Deloitte etc... which are taken from the accounts. If we are indeed 3rd best payers we must be hiding these bonuses somewhere in the accounts...

Maybe basic salaries are quoted and the rest is done in such a way as to reduce tax? No idea.

I think it's a good idea to do this via bonus' personally as they should work for their money rather than just turning up and getting the standard wage.

More clubs should do this IMO.

Yes it's possible they take the basic/fixed figure only. It could also be a bit of exaggeration about the 3rd best payers. On some given weeks maybe...

That would mean dropping Son who's one of the most in form players in the league, it would never happen.
i stand by my opinion as i think we are more solid when we play 3 at the back
i would drop dele instead of son though

regarding the "3rd highest payers" claim, it is difficult to verify. even our annual report of 2016 disclosed that we spent about £88,529,000 on salaries and bonus instead of specifying how much we paid to our players. the comparisons made by media probably base on basic salaries which could be gathered from the agents.

Poch on Toby - odd answer - my guess is bench spot, at best:

Is Toby Alderweireld back in contention for Sunday?

Like always, with the squad we need to decide first of all the starting XI and then the players that will on the bench. We are lucky that all the players are fit and then it's about balance.

New contract on the horizon?

No, I don't talk about rumours.

I'm not too concerned if Alderweireld leaves. Sanchez has proven to be a more than competent alternative.

Indeed, I imagine that a host of top-flight clubs will be interested in acquiring Alderweireld - and that opens the door for the great negotiator (Daniel Levy) to work his magic in trading Alderweireld to a club with another player coming our way in return.

Think what we might gain if Real Madrid wanted him. Or Barca, Man Utd, PSG, etc...
