Could we not set a deadline for Toby to sign the contract on offer which gives us time to recruit a replacement if he won't sign up?

You can blame Campbell for Levy's no tolerance stance on players running down contracts. It is what it is and he won't make exceptions for anyone.

One of the things I’m totally in agreement with Levy on. Otherwise we risk a situation like that lot down the road.

Well he should have been a bit more proactive with Toby this time last year, when we would have got decent money for him and i'm not saying that because he got injured last season !

Actually, the one thing I’m surprised about is the contract for Toby we agreed to with the clause inserted. Seems very un Levy like, but I assume that’s the only way we could get him from under Southampton’s noses.

I suppose looking at the circumstances of the transfer it’s not hard to imagine a mercenary like streak in Toby and his advisors.

Agreed. Most unlike him.

When all the posters on here are screaming on the latest transfer link ‘Get it done Levy!’, ‘Jeez, just pay up like Liverlol!’, Levy is having to weigh up a myriad of unreasonable demands from agents, players and clubs that rarely get reported. I guess that Toby clause was one where he did what he had to do to get it over the line even though it broke one of his rules.

Actually, he should have been more proactive after Toby's first season and up him from the 50-60K/wk he's on to a contract more in line with his performance while stripping the RC out. Had he not signed then, with 4 years remaining, we would have known what his intentions were.

How do know that he didn’t and Toby refused ?

He's already missed out on about £2m plus in wages by not signing a new deal around Jan (if its £50k vs the mooted £120k offered). If he stays another year on the same salary that's the best part of £7.5m he's gambled away.

Then if he does go for £25m next year and is lucky enough to get say £150k after being a bit part player (assuming he would be if he doesn't sign) then he'll be needing about another 18 months just to break even to where he would have been if he had just signed originally.

Surely this must be going through his head too if it really is about money.

Not to get all epistemological but I don't know. You're trying to be clever here but perhaps you are not understanding my point. If Toby refused an improved deal after 1st year when he warranted it then that shows either the contract is not good enough or we are just a stop in his plans. Try again after second year performance justifies improved terms.

If he doesn't sign then you know you must moved him with 2 years remaining (not including extension year) and not let him get into his final year where your negotiating position is weakened. Perhaps they were duped by Toby and his representative's perfidious ways but DL should have been hip to this after Judas.

There was a leak of Van Dijk’s contract which said he was on only about £120,000 a week with bonuses added after when they kept a number of clean sheets.
We’ve been told before that we have one of the better bonus structures in the league so surely we could come close to that.
120k sounds about right as that was given as Mane's wages when he signed. The clean sheets bonus sounds like nonsense. I expect he gets win bonuses, CL qualification and for reaching the final.

Doubt it, footballers aren’t the smartest that’s why they have these people driving their lives in directions that it might not be beneficial for the player.

Well look at it logicly, he doesn't sign a contract, we don't play him and we have lost a player worth approx 40m for 2 years and get zilcho for him in 2 years, he signs a contract and in 2 years we sell / value him at approx 15m, where are we the winner if he doesn't sign a contract ?

Where is Toby the winner, though? I mean, if doing it to one player means another 10 don't try it, that's where the value is.

(Cristian Ceballos tried running his contract down, and is now playing for a side most people have never heard of)

I am particularly excited that is seems Toby is staying. Love having the option of 3 top CB's. See if we can snag De Ligt next season or the one after that.

Apparently, if he doesn't sign a new contract he won't be playing, so lets hope our new 50m CB slots straight in ! good business that, don't play our best CB on principle and it costs us approx 50m !!!

I'm not worried whether Toby is a winner or loser as it's our club i'm concerned about, but if we don't play Toby on principle then it's going to cost us 40-50m to replace him, yep we are the real winner's !!!

Incidentally comparing Ceballos and Toby is totally idiotic, due to their value difference !
