If Man U have dug their heels in and offered substantial cash for Alderweireld in a take it or we move on type of move do people feel happy that we've swallowed it instead of losing him for £25m next summer or not?

Answers need to be rationally thought of from the business perspective not as a fan

Depends who we have lined up. If we think that with the cash we can improve the overall squad by pushing deals over the line we couldn't afford beforehand, pull the trigger. Utd defence under mour is great anyway, Toby wont improve it that much, and he's looking less and less likely to re-integrate into our squad. Martial is not the be all and end all to me - I'm one of the many who'd prefer we signed a quality CM, as we just break/move the ball sooooo slowly at times, and feel the one place we are stocked with genuine talent at AM

If we have nothing and are in scramble mode, then no. We are lacking in depth, and I can't see toby going full bellend (hopefully) and refusing to play - but I'd 100% expect him to run that deal down and leave in the summer though.

Even if he's right it doesn't tell us too much apart from the end is nigh.

He could have gone for £40m or £60m

Tony Martial could be on an easyjet flight down to London in the morning, or alternatively his agent is mapping out his european tour preparing to flog him.

Part of me wants this over as it's clearly the logjam in our window. I'll be seriously pissed off if it's straight cash, only way I'd let it go is if the cash wrapped up a Zaha or equivalent sharply after.

Any Easy Jet insiders on here could check passenger manafests for a Mr A. Martial travelling from Madchester to London Town ?

Just remembered about Baldy flying Bobby Soldier over on Easy Jet when he signed. Maybe thats what did for Bobby. Traumatised by the experience!

I’ll bite;

Even as a business selling Toby to a direct rival and not getting Martial as part of the deal is bad all round. We are just about to move into a state of the art stadium, the one thing (we’ve been told) that keeps us behind the Arsenal’s, Liverpool’s etc. To then go and sell one of the best defenders in the world, which will clearly benefit the buying club, without Martial coming to us, would be a PR disaster. Just think how it would be reported. We are supposed to be joining the elite league, we can’t still be seen to be trampled on. Getting £50+ mill and not being able to spend it (lack of time, players not available) would be a disaster.

Martial would improve us, he’ll add speed, directness and something we are missing.

It must be a Toby/Martial deal or no deal.

Its not a matter of MUST that we sell Toby in this TW. Theres still the January window. If we really want Anthony Martial, then we should start the charm offensive in a big way. In January he would have 18 months left on his contract.

In January there will be clubs willing to deal on Toby. Clubs fighting at the top of their respective leagues or in need of reinforcement at CB (see bindippers in January with VVD as an example).

Its not all doom and gloom and a matter of must wrt Toby being sold this window.

You know what I mean. Taking emotion out of the equation does it make practical sense for a club to sell him or risk losing x amount for digging our heels in etc

We wouldn't lose anything. We paid £11.5 million for him as a 26yr old. We would get back what we paid and some if released for £25 million next season at the age of 30/31.

We wouldn't lose anything but we'd miss out on a higher fee. It's a tough one but I really feel we need to sell Toby this summer. If it wasn't for that clause I'd be saying otherwise

What would you do? Sell Toby or keep him for another year to lose him for £25m should Martial be a no go?
Yeah that's exactly what I would do, I've made my feelings very well known. I work for a retail development company here in Texas. We're developing this 25 acre site another developer asked to buy some land (which we would have taken a short term profit on) and we said fuck no cause we aren't selling to our competition. We shouldn't sell to our competition.
