Reading a lot about how great he was, personally thought he was still rusty and at fault for a number of utds chances. Made some decent tackles once we were 2 up but still think he's below his best. If he keeps Sanchez out the team it will be very harsh.

Started off very erratic tonight and you felt he could be culpable here in exposing us defensively but credit to him, he just went through the gears and finished the game back to his imperious best.

Sanchez will undoubtedly play many games but you feel that this back four tonight is our very best defence and one that stands up against any other in the league.

If the club makes a gofundme page for his new contract I'll contribute 200 quid. Back to his best today, really awesome.

In his three seasons here we've had the best defence in the league in two of them, and the only one we didn't was the one where he hardly played.

Last night we remembered why. Immense performance. If he's fit and motivated, he is the best CB in the league.

If there's any chance of him still signing, we should do whatever it takes.

Fair comment - but he'll remain rusty if he doesn't play.
I'd rather use him, clean the rust off and get a shiney new Toby again.

Doesn’t Vertonghen’s contract end at the end of this season? Isn’t this as much if not more of a worry than Toby?

Thought he signed a new one last season after himself stalling for a couple of years and worrying us.
I can’t find any evidence of it as I thought the same...

Blimmey, looks like it was December 2016 he last signed one. Feels like it was more recent.

The stat/fact I always think about with Toby is throughout his career the team he has played for has always finished first or second in the league in goals conceded. The one exception is last year we had the third fewest goals conceded, but Toby also missed 4-5 months. I can't remember if this is where I originally saw this, but here's a year old Reddit post as source: link.

Obviously there are caveats with this - coaching, teammates, and play style all matter; plus, I don't think he played much at Atletico, and it might not be out of the ordinary for Ajax to lead the league in fewest goals conceded. Still, it seems remarkable that Southampton had the second fewest goals conceded in his one year there, and that we were joint league leaders in his first two years with us. On the measure that seems most important for a defender (goals conceded), Toby has always been a success. I would love if we could keep him for a few more seasons, but honestly have no idea what to make of his situation.

Totally true stat.
I think he has that Ledley style about him where he is ahead of the game most of the time and he calms players around him down.
I believe before his injury, he'd hardly ever been booked either. Just shows how rarely he resorts to last ditch lunge tackled.

Seen a video of Poch hugging him after that win..... I thought there was no come back from what "happened".

Anyone else think he was frozen out the team... And that club PR system went into overdrive thereafter.
