I do kind of wonder if anyone would be willing to purchase him in January for, say, 40M, and then loan him back to us for the rest of the season. With the goal of not having to compete with other clubs for him in the summer, as it's likely that there will be many many suitors at 25M.

I disagree with this.

50k a week with 50% tax gives 25k a week or 100k a month in his pocket. That’s 1 million every 10 months or 3.6 million over a 3 year contract. He could make that work for him over the rest of his life.

Actually his tax burden will be less than 50% ... more like 40% so if he saves all of the above then he has 10% wages to live on. He’s probably paid off house and cars (or could have if providing for his family were such a concern) and so 5k a month is enough to live off for the remainder of his contract.

(Indeed with the money saved away he would have significant capital and MINIMUM 5k a month for life).

If he moves it is for sporting reasons not economic reasons.
You have ignored what he will hav to give his agent as a percentage of wages/bonuses etc.

Even if the release clause is met, which it undoubtedly will be, Toby can still turn around and say no to other clubs. Who's to say that he stays until the end of the season, we win the league, he sees what we are capable of (sure he has seen it already) and decides he wants to stay and continue to fight for the cause.

Or we win the league with him, he can now say he has a trophy and feels free to go make as much $ as he can elsewhere.

Perception. Some people will look at a person and think, he has a roof over his head, water, electricity, food, what more can he want?

That person looks at the next who has a nice car etc...

That person looks at the guy with two houses and a boat etc...

That person looks at the guy with the private jet...

That person looks at the guy with his own island...

Each person will want more.

A roof? Ahhh, I used to dream of living under a roof. We lived in an old septic tank, all 26 of us.

Yes you’re right but it has nothing to do with wanting to look after his family, which was the reason given.

As i understand it from itk bits and bobs
1. while injured, Poch went to Levy and said pay Toby what he is asking for
2. Levy agreed and they shook on it
3. Toby came back and asked for more
4. Poch upset with that and froze him out a bit/ started preparing for life after toby
5. Toby's team surprisingly couldn't get him a club that would pay him the wedge he wants
6. Poch starts new season saying everyone has a clean slate
7. Toby been v good....maybe slight management of hamstrings aside nothing to worry about
8. waiting for (a) someone to offer him serious wedge and pays 25 million in the summer (b) he takes the original Levy deal (c) plays one more year and leaves on a free (unlikely)

about right?

As a PS....Toby has lost the difference between reported current 50k per week and agreed to 130K x 1 year. Approx 4 million pounds. By summer that will be 6 million.

IF a team paid the 25 million and went to 200K per week (alleged wage) - he would make 3.5 million more per year which means that 2 years into the deal he'd be a little ahead and after 5 years 10 mill ahead.
IF no one pays the fee and he walks on a free, his salary (if he got 200K per week) would catch up in about 4 years.

I don't believe he gets 200K and a signing bonus.

The risk really doesn't make sense. IF he pulled a hammy again he'd be up the proverbial

fair play to anybody who maximizes their earning potential, doesnt make it neccesarily the best choice he can make for his personal hapiness or career.

That's whats so sad about Toby's situation, he'll most likely be walking away from the place where he can enjoy his football the most.

I think this is considerably less likely than us winning the league.

We don't even know it's that, he might have wanted to play in italy/somewhere before he signed for us.

It is what it is. Same with eriksen or the hundreds of players we've let go through the years. Did a deal, that's it.

Bit unlucky for the ball to go between his legs. He was in position to block it, the guy just put it the only place his legs weren't.
Not for me. Prefer my defenders to stand up and block. He kinda turn his back on it.

Still did better than the rest though
