I assumed (rightly or wrongly) that the wage wasn’t necessary the sticking point (even though it was reported he has come back and asked for more), it was more to do with a low release clause he wanted put into it. If you couple that with him coming back wanting even more money, where really is the incentive for us?

We continue to benefit from his excellent performances but he could then quite easily be taken from us for small fee leaving us without him and a load of uncertainty every window.

I have loved Toby during his time here and him and Vertonghen in tandem is a thing of beauty.

But...

I would be concerned of stifling Sanchez's progress with us as Toby has shown signs of wear and tear and long-term Sanchez will give us the greater benefit (so wouldn't want him to grow frustrated and leave due to lack of game time).

Vertonghen is also getting a bit older as well so may be more beneficial to have the younger and fresher Sanchez alongside him to give us good balance of youth and experience.

I'm far more concerned with Eriksen committing to a new deal...

Am I going mad? How does this Toby one suggest he's off? Just got told to 'read it' on Twitter.

I think he is off due to other info, but looks exactly the same template to me. Yeah Jan won some awards last year but Toby didn't, can make some up for him.

Edit: Apparently the original release was extremely basic and they just updated it with a copy of Jan's.

Crazy to think that when we signed Toby and inserted the £25m release clause 3.5 years ago, it represented almost double the reported fee we paid for him. Fast forward to today and £25m probably represents half of his current market value. A clear illustration of how football transfer fees are rising at a ridiculously alarming rate...

I think people are getting carried away with thinking he’s definitely off this summer. If anybody activated his clause it would make him the third most expensive player transfer over 30 years old of all time. I’d say that there’s a strong possibility nobody activates it.
