I think it's his aggressive passing that really gives him that extra dimension over any of our other central defenders in recent years. Yeah Ledley was very good at bringing the ball out of defense, but he wasn't casually pinging perfect 70 yarders left and right like Toby does. We know what he brings to our defense, but I think his ability to consistently switch the play is very important to our attack as well.

I very much enjoyed just looking over the first page or so of this thread in the midst of our current (and justified) Toby spunk fest.

For this season, I'm not sure about overall. This season no defender in the league has performed at his level nor have any got close to it. When I mean elite I mean top 3 in that position, because a player is not elite it doesn't mean he isn't a top player.

I'm not convinced the others you talk of are a level above him. Not every player at Madrid / Bayern is better than every player at the likes of Spurs.

Swap any of the 'top three' defenders you named out for Toby and you'd see no noticeable drop off.

Well now that we can all agree on your interpretation of what defines an elite player, do you think he's world class? Is world class top 2 in that position? Or top 4? How about top class? That's more like top 10 right.

The same Boateng that was a joke in the premier league yeah....? The same Pique that has had it easy at Barcelona since he left Man Utd.......
The Premier League is a unique league in that even the bottom teams can give you a good game, the German League and to a lesser extent the Spanish League have a much bigger decrease in talent throughout their top leagues, therefore the likes of Boateng can look world class, yet when they come up against good teams, lately Juventus, can be made to look just as ordinary as every other defender in world football.
This season Alderweireld has played against Aguero, Costa and other top players and has come out of each game with his head held high. I regard him as one of the elite.
