I think some of the doubt comes from the fact he's basically just come in and taken over where Soldado left off, in the eyes of a lot of fans. We had a guy who worked bloody hard but just couldn't hit the net, swapped him out and bought in... another bloke who does the same thing. The fact he's only 22 is what i believe keeps a majority of fans on his side, he works seriously hard and really makes a difference too, so it's not like he's being carried through matches.

Sure, he might not be netting 20 a season next year, but i don't doubt that, once he's settled down and his confidence is on the rise, he'll be putting away double figures at least.

It's the exact same characters who want him sold that wanted Son, Rose, Dembele, basically half of the entire playing staff sold.

Some people never learn.

It takes time to settle and the guy is only 22 FFS. Seriously. The majority of our best players all struggled for at least 1 season.

Who yet again aren't present in here when he scores...funny that.

Will save us a shit load of money if he comes good! Don't think we are at the told you so stage yet though, got to do a lot more than knock in a rebound. Simply has to get to a stage where he's challenging Kane for a spot

Really good for him and the team to score his first league goal from open play

Hopefully his confidence will increase again and he can continue to contribute

All he needs to do is help us win games. Strikers are bought to score, but he does so much otherwise that as long as he is like a 8-12 goals per season player, especially late in matches and starting in some cups, that's all I feel we really need.

Who are these same characters then? Which posters wrote off all those players? Name them? Or is it fact you just conflating different opinions in order to fabricate this group of supposed 'characters'.

And yes some people do not learn, they don't learn than young players actually need more than just time as the likes of Blondel, Postiga, Davenport, Reid to name a few attest.

That for every Rose, Son, Dembele there is a Rebrov, Paulinho, Soldaldo, Bentley who never adapt.

It is absolutely laughable that a striker who has 2 league goals to his name, the second of which has just come 6 months after he last is seemingly above criticism or critic for some. The issue isn't with such a player and that performance level but with those who dare pass unfavourable opinion of him.

I'm glad (as is everyone) that he scored today but that does not alter the fact that he has been a failure so far and that he has an absolute mountain to climb in short space of time to alter than perception in any way.

No idea why you always have to get so aggressive in this thread.

Would love a gif of the way Son celebrated with him after everyone else had gone. He basically jumped on him and cuddled him for ages - love the spirit of this team.

It's not aggression it is just response to the incessant defense and absolute refusal of some to critic the player or tolerant others doing that. A prime example is that post, 1 goal and suddenly that somehow invalidates any previous concerns.

Was I opposed to criticism or was I opposed to all those claiming to sell him?

You might want to read it again as you're aggressively arguing against something of which I never stated.

He's won me over tbh.

I know we all wanted the striker who banged 31 goals last season, and there is nothing stopping him from becoming that player again, but if he continues to work his nuts off and creates goals for our attacking mids then we really cannot complain.

The rest of the team clicking into gear in the fashion it has has been of great benefit of him, because now when he plays the industrious and intelligent work he puts in is more appreciated than before. Yes, ultimately we want him to be able to cover Kane as a source of goals, but at least with Son and Alli racking up such good figures themselves it is still of huge benefit to the team that he covers Kane's overall leading of the line.

I expect better of him next season, but right now he's doing his job when he plays.
