Vincent Janssen needs to feel the love at Tottenham and for us to help him, says Mauricio Pochettino

Vincent Janssen needs extra training to reach the required level at Tottenham but Mauricio Pochettino promised to show the Dutchman “love” to help him get there.

Janssen joined Spurs for nearly £18million from AZ Alkmaar last summer but has yet to score in open play for the club, while he also suffered an ankle injury that curtailed his progress.

With Harry Kane attending the birth of his first child – a girl named Ivy – Janssen was included in the starting XI for last weekend’s FA Cup win over Aston Villa. He played poorly, was replaced by Dele Alli after an hour and Tottenham improved immediately.

Janssen has only three goals in 23 matches but Pochettino sought to release the pressure on him. He said: “He’s in a moment now where he needs love and for us to help him, and the way we can help him is to try to push him and maybe give him extra work to try to help him be fitter, to be sharp and try to recover his good feelings.

“We will push him to improve and try to reach the level we expect. We know that now he is in a good period but I am not concerned about him.

“It is true that after the Villa game he was not at his best, and when you have that feeling, and receive some criticism, it is always bad for a youngster. But that is football and we need to accept that.

“He needs to be clever and try to use that to be more motivated to work, and show he was right for us when we signed him.”

Pochettino admitted that Janssen may not have been ready when he was first summoned. Signed as back-up for Harry Kane, Janssen was given a run in the team when Kane picked up an ankle injury in September, which left him on the sidelines for nearly two months.

The Tottenham manager explained: “Maybe we expected him not to play too much. When Harry was injured, Janssen was our main striker and played a lot.

“He is another young player who has come from a different country, a different league, and he needs to adapt his qualities to a new team and a new league.

“Maybe his run in the team came too early. But it is part of the process. We need to help because he is a kid, still very young.”

Crystal clear we needed a proper backup to HK last summer so it begs the question why sign a 'science project' player? If the club was realistic about winning the league why not loan in/sign a more expeienced striker, even if he was a veteran like Llorente/Max Kruse/Mario Gomez/etc. Instead we went for a striker who is so clearly out of his depth and that will cost us come May due to VJ woeful showing during HK absence earlier this season....

Poch is never going to sign a 30-year-old.

And to blame our poor league form earlier in the season on Janssen is ridiculous. The draws against Leicester, Bournemouth and West Brom may end up being damaging, but Janssen only started the games against West Brom and Leicester. Against West Brom, Alli missed about 3 or 4 sitters before finally scoring when it was too late to get a win. Against Leicester, he actually scored and caused Morgan and Huth plenty of problems.

Tottenham improved because they brought Alli and more importantly they brought Nkoudou on and took a fucking CB off and started to overload attacking zones, not because Janssen went off. If Janssen had stayed on he may well have benefitted from playing with Alli and Nkoudou.

No wonder he felt fucked off, I said that after the game, it was a ridiculous substitution to make to a guy who you're trying to "show love" to, and was always more likely to demoralise him. He didn't play that badly, we were just creatively inept, mainly due to the selections and tactical application employed by Poch and embellished by Bruce. Janssen did what Kane does in similar circumstances (like when he's been on the odd lean run and gone weeks without scoring), he huffed and puffed, dropped and drifted, pressed hard and tried to hold it up and make the odd something out nothing.

But he doesn't do anything like what Kane does.

He simply does not put himself in positions to get on the end of attacking moves or put himself in positions where he can score. Too often he's stuck out in the channels or at the edge of the box. When he does try to get in behind he's almost always offside. Kane's strongest attributes are his movement, his finishing and his striking instincts. Janssen has shown absolutely nothing in any of these areas. Shearer, who would obviously know his shit, did a piece after the Villa game, or at half time (I can't quite remember), highlighting his deficiencies in these areas.

I like Janssen and unlike a lot of people I'm still firmly of the belief that he'll end up as a success here. He's got a healthy work rate, reasonably strong hold up play and he's good at getting his team mates involved playing off him. But to say he does what Kane does is just flat out, incontrovertibly wrong, even when Kane is off form. He deserved to be taken off in that game, particularly if we wanted to go on and win it.

I said he does what Kane does "in similar circumstances" i.e. when Kane is going through lean spells (which he has) and/or the team is struggling creatively (which we were for much of Janssen's spell early in the season and we did against Villa for example where we played 3cb's and none of our best creative players against a deep set team), which is keep pressing and working. And he does put himself in scoring positions, but in the early part of the season we just weren't anywhere near as fluid or tactically efficient as we have been lately, the exception being that Villa game where Poch picked a team devoid of its most creative players and stuck Janssen in and expected him to do what Kane does when he's got the "A" team around him.

Shearer's a monosyllabic fuckwit who's tactical analysis isn't worth a wank. I'm not saying everything Janssen does is right, or as good as everything Kane does, it isn't, but then I don't expect our back up to be,especially given his age, experience and having to adapt to this league, but he's proved previously that he can score goals, his instincts can be good, he's proving that he can perform the other stuff that Poch wants from his 9, working, pressing and holding. If someone with Kane's ability can have spells where he can't score, then when Janssen does it is because "he's doing all the wrong things" but I don't remember Shearer suggesting Kane was "doing all the wrong things" when he couldn't score for long spells.

Ok....just for you

LONDON - Vincent Janssen is not easy at Tottenham Hotspur. Yet he does not choose a room at the English club. Galatasaray showed interest, but has rejected a move to Istanbul rush from Oss. "He has not taken the decision to go in," said his agent Patrick van Diemen.

Janssen made last summer's move from AZ to Tottenham Hotspur, that 22 million paid for him. At Spurs he must be satisfied at the moment with a supporting role. The last two league games he was not in the selection of coach Mauricio Pochettino.

A departure Janssen thinks despite interest from Turkey not. "Galatasaray has been reported, but Vincent remains at Tottenham Hotspur. He has to go there not taken the decision," says Van Diemen, who understands that Janssen is interesting for more clubs. "It could be that there are more clubs interested in. No doubt there are many clubs who follow him. But besides Galatasaray there are no clubs that are reported."

'Conscious choice'
The former striker of Almere City and AZ not think of a departure from the current number two of the Premier League. "Last summer, Vincent made a deliberate choice. He has a long-term contract signed with a nice club with good facilities and a good coach. He's completely his chance at Spurs. Until his injury he has had in every game playing time. He it has good to his liking and he tries to take his chance. "

I've got a sneaky premonition that he'll come good after a full pre season under poch where he'll slim down, get fully healthy and get his confidence back so he starts trusting his instincts again. Poch's track record is just too good to fail him.

He joined us on July 12. He had a full pre season. It's not the preseason. He needs to adapt to the pace and aggressiveness of the league.

he still has a poor body shape imo, it takes a lot of time to catch up to the fitness levels required to play for poch and to play in the league so he isn't consistently behind,

Not starting today, ouch..

I think that's more to keep the pressure off him. If he comes on when we're already 2 or 3 up there is less onus for him to score. Whereas if he starts and he doesn't score in the first half the crowd will get on his back and pile even more pressure on his already fragile confidence. And at this point it's about trying to rebuild his confidence so he plays his natural game rather than trying to hard.

Yeah he was good today. Wish we could give him one of these "easier" (maybe not today) games where we actually play him with some intelligence alongside him, get Alli and Eriksen and later Lamela in and around him helping to create space and chances. Seems every time he gets to play he gets lumbered with Sissoko, Son and N'Koudou - not a criticism of those players individually, but they're all huff and puff - there's not a creative or bone among them. That's four workhorses up front together invariably against entrenched defences.

I really hope he gets some more chances with our more creative players around him. Perhaps if we get to a comfortable position in some future games this season (2 up) he can come on and give Kane a rest after an hour or so.

Poor decision by Poch today not starting him, it really showed having Son up top on his own, thankfully he realised and made the change at HT as without a doubt Janssen made a big difference today and credit where its due!

Here's a link to the fourth goal.

Look at the way Janssen spots the one-two when Winks is on the ball, points to Son, makes himself available immediately and plays it in first time. His awareness around the box is a big part of why his hold-up play is so good, and he showed last year that when he's confident he's a damn good finisher. If he's ever able to get his fitness up to the required level and regain his mojo in front of goal I still back him to come good eventually.

He had a decent game, but he's still miles away of being in the proper level to be our backup striker.
He holds the ball well, but takes too long to pass it.

I really liked that he asked to take the penalty though. It showed mental strength
